Person-Note* | Martha Dora Bandy (nee Mortimer) was a woman of strong character who possessed great courage and determination. Her youngest son Joseph (born 1885) became very ill when he was a small boy. Martha immediately saddled the horse and with the baby in a basket in front of her, set off Guildford some 60 miles miles away to see a doctor. When the baby had recieved the necessary attention she returned home on horseback. Joseph obviously suffered no ill-effects from the illness or the journey as he survived until 1976 when he died peacfully in his 91st year. Thomas Amos and his wife contributed considerably to the development of the River properties both on their own farm at "Woodbine" and others for whom they had done contract work. Failing health eventually forced Thomas to give up working away from his own farm, but he continued to potter about until his death on 21 July 1921. He was buried at the Gingin Cemetary. Before his death Martha put the property up for sale as she was unable to carry on the work on her own. It was purchased by Thomas Hobson in 1920. Martha remained in Gingin for a short period, but after her husband's death she moved to "Glen Valley" at Gillingarra with her sons Reuben and David. David and his family moved to Carnamah and farmed in that area and Robert left "Hill View" the property owned by his brother Thomas Bandy, and went to live with his twin brother Reuben at Glen Valley. Martha lived with her two sons until shortly before her death when she went to a nursing home (Nurse Ballantyne's, 118 First Avenue, Bassendean) to be cared for. She died aged 94 years in 1938 and rests alongside her husband in the Gingin Cemetery. | |
