Richard BANDY

Person-Note* From Bandy:

There are a number of postings that mention Richard Bandy his wives and
children. Many contain conflicting information. I cannot be sure of all the
facts are regarding Richard, but I will offer the following observations.
My assumptions are based on eary documents not more recent family writings. If
anyone has records from the 1700's that add to what I present below please let
me know. I would be very interested.

My best guess is that the "first" American Richard Bandy was born about 1720 and
died 1795. There is much speculation that Richard is from Liverpool, England. There is no
record of him living there nor is there any record of any Bandy living there in
the early 1700's when Richard probably was born.

He left a will (a copy of which I am trying to secure from Bertie O'Quinn). Children born to this Richard and to likely wife Elizabeth Cardwell Bandy include Mary (who married
Thomas Lewis), Thomas (who married Mary Polly Christian and nancy Burns),
Richard (who married Jane), John (who maried Lucy Christian), George (who
married Drusilla Meador), Sarah (who married Benjamin Jordan), Ann Nancy (who
married james Nabors), Eliza (who married Aguella Greer), and perhaps Solomon.

There are many modern references to twins Richard Solomon and Solomon Richard.
There are no references dating from the 1700s regarding twins with thoses names.
Moreover middle names were rare at that time. My guess is that someome
speculated that there might have been twins and that speculation became a part
of family records.

This appears to be as far back as we can go with this family right now.

Person-Note* From Bandy:

Richard's wife name has also been the subject of much speculation. My best guess
is that he married Elizabeth Cardwell and she is the mother of most of his
children. This is based on the fact that "Richard Bandy and his wife Elizabeth"
were named in the 1780 Henrico County, Virginia will of Thomas Cardwell. At that
time it was common for married daughters to be left property jointly with their
husbands. However, as the will does no specifically list Elizabeth as Thomas'
daughter it is speculation.

"Richard Bandy and wife Elizabeth" purchased real estate on November 24, 1766 in Cumberland County, Virgina and on June 20, 1788 in Franklin County, Virginia. These
transactions strongly support that Richard did have a wife Elizabeth, but do not
prove that she was the daughter of Thomas Cardwell. Also, they do not prove that
there wasn't an earlier wife Jane Cummins.

Richard did perhaps mary Lucy Justice in 1794 the year before his death. They
perhaps had a daughter Katy.
Some mention a marriage to Mahala Jane Cummins. Richard's son Richard (Jr.)
married a Jane. Her full name is not known. As there are no references to Mahala
Jane from the 1700's it is possible that more recent references to a earlier
Jane result from confusion over which Richard actually married a Jane.
There is speculation that Richard married an Elizabeth Moss. This seems to be a
confused reference to a law suit between Elizabeth Bandy (possibly Richard's
daughter) and William Moss, Jr. He apparently promised to mary Elizabeth Bandy
but decided not to. She sued him. Richard and Elizabeth Bandy (her parents?)
were witnesses in the case. She won the case and later sued Moss' estate to
recover her award.

Because we are not sure that this is the right wife for Richard BANDY (963-YOU) , I have not pursued Elizabeth's ancestry further.

Person-Note* From Snapp (pp. 85-6):

"He came with his parents to Morgan County, IL in 1833. About two years later he came to Greenbush in Warren County ... John Simmons was a hardy pioneer. Settling here in an early day he found plenty of wild game (and) his greatest enjoyment was a deer chase. He generally kept a pack of trained hounds, and with his long rifle he rarely returned home from a deer hunt without one or two deer. During the spring and summer he engaged in farming. During the fall and winter he ran a horse-power threshing machine and probably did more threshing than any other man in the early days (of Greenbush). In politics he was a Democrat. During his last days he became a believer in the religion of the Lord Jesus Christ and died in the faith at the home of his duaghter, Mrs. F. M. Jennings."

Person-Note* From Lawrence, et al. (p. 2-361)

John F. was small like his mother, but blue-eyed like his father. He remembered that Indians often walked along a path on the south side of the creek, when he was a child..and that sounds for their counting were one, tee, two, ru'ru, three, ma'ca...

John F. hired a girl from Greenbush to care for his children (after Caroline died); she was Emma DRAKE and they married the next year. They soon had children of their own...From the abstracts, Mary LAWRENCE learned that John F.'s land was several times in the name of Henry STAAT; mortgaged when John F. needed to borrow money.

In 1885, the Youngs built the house where Don and Mary LAWRENCE now live...Before (the well by the house was dug) it was the duty of the sons to take a horse and sled to bring a barrel of water every day from the spring at the east side of the farm near the creek. About 1908 the Youngs installed a steam furnace in their home; in 1909 they bought their first car, a Ford.

(I have a note that there is a Masonic emblem on his tombstone, but cannot find out where I got this information)

From Lawrence, et al. (p. 2-264):

Caroline married John and early in their marriage they moved to Iowa where John F. ran a tavern near Rome, Iowa on the Skunk River; his family lived upstairs over the tavern. They were poor, and when John F.'s cousin, Henry STAAT, visited them he gave Caroline $20 before he left; a lot of money at the time.

When their four children, George, Lewis, Allen, and Katherine, were from three to ten years old, Caroline became gravely ill and as a last resort, the doctor performed an operation on the kitchen table in her home and removed a large abdominal growth; she did not recover from the operation.
