Name Variation  Frederick R Kennaby was also known as Frank Kennaby.
Birth*Sep 1926 He , son of Arthur Charles Kennaby and Edith May Sills, was born in Sep 1926 at West Ham, ESS, ENG.2
Note*  Frank writes:
1939
My family also lived in Plaistow in east London. I was 13 in 1939. I was not evacuated as part of the Government's programme. I had an elder married sister who lived near Brighton and my family arranged for me to stay with her and I went there before war was declared. Because I was not an official evacuee there was not a local school place for me and I was not accepted by the local children. I cycled two and a half miles to another school each day and, because school was in shifts, I spent the other half on the South Downs. When other London children arrived, I was not accepted by them either.

A family of official evacuees - a woman and two girls - joined us from London. I was disgusted by their dirtiness and appalling behaviour. You could not reject evacuees so we had to put up with them. Because my sister and her husband had no children they received the minimum level of ration coupons. Their neighbours with children, who were able to get things that they might not use completely often gave them surplus food. My sister's husband Bob took up fishing, like many other people during the war. Living on the coast they had access to the sea as well as rivers, and were able to supplement their rations with fresh fish.

Canadian soldiers were stationed in the area, and took over houses overlooking the sea. All coastlines were taken over by the military. They ripped up the fences and burned them, and ruined the insides of the houses. My brother was in the RAF, and was shot down twice over England. Once he managed to land on the South Downs. He was arrested and interrogated. He managed to convince his captors that he was English by stating that his sister lived nearby. He was taken to her house with a police escort so that she could confirm his identity. Many allied pilots were shot down over England. If soldiers manning defences were not sure of the identity of a plane they took no chances and shot it down. All along the Kent and Sussex coast oil was poured on the water, ready to be set alight in the event of an attempted invasion. The Government always denied there were such attempts, but there were strong local rumours, and during a war people believed such stories.

Bob was a special policeman, and he went to the clocktower for regular meetings. I often accompanied him, or went for a walk with my sister whilst he was inside.

I stayed in Brighton for a year. I returned to London, but my school had been bombed. I therefore began work at a woodyard in Hainault. Each day I cycled 10 miles each way from Plaistow to Hainault. Part of the journey was across Wanstead Flats, a large open area which was pitch black at night. Cycle lamps were not allowed, nor were torches for pedestrians. ARP wardens patrolled the area constantly. The road was poor and there were many potholes which could trip you up and damage your bike. There were ack ack and pom pom guns both sides of the road. If a plane flew low the guns would burst into life. The noise was deafening but the flames lit up the road. One day I was stopped by a policeman at Forest Gate Road, who would not let me cycle any further. I was annoyed until he pointed to an unexploded bomb hanging in the trees.

One day I was allowed to bring some offcuts of wood home. I cycled with wood strapped around me and balancing on the handlebars. It took three hours and I was late at 'siren time'. When I got home my family were in the shelter in the garden. My Dad was angry at me for being late, but when he saw the wood in the morning he realised why I had been delayed. We had a shelter in the garden. Every household had to have a shelter, either inside or outside. The outside 'Anderson' ones consisted of a pit covered with a roof of corrugated iron. Whole families spent the night together during raids. Each family was responsible for constructing their shelter. The year long 'phoney war' provided time for such preparations. The elderly and others who were unable to do so had theirs built by the Council. A council worker preparing one for Mrs Willis dug into a well and almost disappeared own it. He ran in white as a sheet. The indoor 'Morrison' shelters comprised wire mesh around three sides.

Our house in Plaistow was large, with a cellar and three floors. One of my vivid memories was hearing the sirens, and standing on the balcony with my brother George to see what was happening. It was the blitz, and we saw London ablaze from the top of our house. The first local bombing was in Stopford Road. Four large houses and a vicarage had been destroyed. Old people lived there and we heard their screams as the bombs dropped and the houses burned. They all died.

George's friend Bernie was medically unfit for the forces. He joined the fire brigade instead. One of the incidents he attended was a school on fire following a bombing. He went into the building to check for casualties and became trapped inside. He died having helped several staff and pupils to safety.3
