Benjamin Cooley,son of Benjamin Cooley and Margaret Bliss, and his 2nd wife Mary Needham are
my 5thg grandparents through their daughter Naomi who was married to James Ewing, Esq.
Naomi was twin to Azariah and half sister to Gideon.
Gideon was the first settler in Pittsford, VT arriving in 1766 from Greenwich,Mass. Gideon returned
to Greenwich to get his younger half brother Benjamin and returned to Pittsford. In 1769, Gideon
moved his young family to Pittsford. Soon many others from Greenwich followed Gideon and
Benjamin to Pittsford including Gideon's father. Gideon ultimately removed his family to Ontario,
Canada in 1793.
As a native Vermonter I have often visited the old cemeteries. These are some of the stones (a
question mark indicates inscription not clear) in The Old Baptist Burying Ground in Pittsford which
is also called the North Burying Ground; and, it is considered the oldest cemetery in Pittsford.
1) In memory of Mr. Benjamin Cooley who died April 1,1790 in th 89 year of his age

2) Mary wife of Benjamin Cooley died June 16,1799 in the 74th year of her age

3) In memory of Mr Anthony Cooley who died in the (?)25 year of his life
4) N------(perhaps Naomi) Cooley daughter of ----- ----- (perhaps Azariah Henry) Cooley of

5) Amanda wife of John Cooley died March 16,1852
6) John Cooley died July 12,1856

The following headstones are found in the Pittsford Congregational Cemetery:
1) Col Benj. Cooley who died Feb 27, 1810 in the 63 years of his age
He was one of the first settlers in the town, was an officer in the revolutionary war (sic) and a friend
to God and man
2) In memory of Ruth wife of Col. Benjamin Cooley who died Sept. 5,1826 in the 68 years of her
age
3) Susannah daughter of Benjamin and Ruth Cooley died April 19, 1793 aged 17 days
4) Azariah Cooley died Sept 5, 1852(?) in his 73 years
5) In memory of Lewis H son of Azariah & Lydia Cooley who died Oct 2 1831 in his 24th year of his
age
6) In memory of Benjamin Cooley Jr. who died Dec.2 1858 aged(?)62 years

Col. Benjamin and Ruth (Beech) Cooley had 10 Children.
Greenwich, Mass no longer exists but along with two other towns was flooded to create the
Quabbin Resevoir whic supplies water for Boston, Mass. The graves were moved and the Quabbin
Cemetery was created. There are two plots with members of the Cooley family--#733 and #824.
Each lot contains seven graves. Lot 824 contains the twin to my 4thg grandmother Naomi Cooley
Ewing--Azariah, his wife Mercy,a daughter Polly, a son James,a son Ebenezer,a son Azariah, and
James Cooley.
