Person-Note* | EDWARD JEWETT, was born in Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, about 1580. He married there Oct. 1, 1604 Mary Taylor, daughter of William Taylor. This marriage is recorded in the Bradford Parish Register. He lived in Bradford, England, where he was a cloth manufacturer and where he died. His will, dated Feb. 2, 1614, was proved by his widow July 12, 1615. This will is on file in the archbishopric of York. The following is a true copy. "In the name of God Amen, the second day of February in the year of our Lord God 1614 in the XIIth year of the reign sovereign Lord James by the grace of God, King of England, France and Ireland, defender of the faith etc., and of Scotland the eight and forty whereas nothing is more certain thandeath and nothing more uncertain than the house of death. Therefore, I Edward Jewett of Bradford within the dicos of York, Clothier, though sick and deseased in body yett sounde in minde and memorye I praise God therefore doo in this uncertainty of life knowninge that even in health we are subject to death make, publish and declare this my last will and testant in the names and form following (that is to say) "First and principally I give up and comend my soule in the hands of Almighty God my creator and redeemer hoping and assurredly trusting to have full and free pardon and remission of all my sinnes by the precious death and burial of Christ Jesus my alone Saviour and for jestification by his righteousness and my body I yeald to earth to be decently buried at the decreation of my friends. Person-Note* | 9th Great Grandfather Walter Woodworth [Woodward] came from Kent Co., England on the ship called the 'Mary and John', to Scituate, Mass. in 1635 (another source says the year was 1630). He married Elizabeth Rogers and they had 11 children. He was assigned the third lot on Kent St., which runs along the ocean front at the corner of Meeting House Lane, and there he built a house. In that year he owned other land, a tract on the First Herring Brook not far below Stockbridge Mill, where afterwards stood the residence of the poet Samuel Woodworth, and another tract on Walnut Tree Hill, just west of the present Greenbush or South Scituate R. R. Station, which was in early times called Walter Woodworth's Hill. In 1666 he became a purchaser of sixty acres at Weymouth. In 1640 Walter was assessed nine shillings for the public use, and March 2, 1641, freeman: and in June 4, 1645, he was appointed surveyor of highways in Scituate, and again in 1646 and 1656. His name appears frequently on the town records of Scituate as juror, etc. In 1654 he was a member of the First Church, which ordained Charles Chancy as their minister. | |
