Person-Note* | NOTES REGARDING BANDY FAMILY by Virgie Bandy Carroll Information regarding the ancestors of Mary Susan Doyle and Lewis Allen Bandy is scarce. However, my father, Eldridge Bandy, gave the following information to me and I am supplementing this data with some memories of my own. Grandpa Bandy (Lewis Allen) worked for the Chicago and Great Western Railway as a Section Foreman when he and Mary Susan first moved to Dumont, Iowa. They then moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa after living in Dumont for 24 years where he took a less strenuous job as watchman at a draw bridge for the same railway company. Vernon (my brother) was just a young boy then, but he remembered working for Grandpa on the section. He said that Grandpa did not know how to read and write, yet he had a crew of a large number of men working for him. He would remember each week how much time each man worked and then Grandma made up his time sheets. When he needed to order tools and equipment he would draw pictures of them while out on the road, give them to Grandma, and she would order them for him each week. Grandma was busy most of the time cooking and sewing, and her hobby was raising a beautiful flower garden. As a child, I used to marvel at the lovely marigolds, zennias, bachelor buttons and various other flowers, but those yellow and orange marigolds in full sun and along the border of Grandpa's vegetable garden surely presented a lovely picture. Grandpa and Grandma were blessed with ten children, and there is no doubt that they had their trials and tribulations in rearing their large family. First, there was my father, ELDRIDGE WADE BANDY, born in Roanoke, Virginia, on November 18, 1875. He died on October 8, 1924 in Huron, South Dakota as a result of a railroad accident at Lake Preston, South Dakota. He is buried in the family plot at Huron. JAMES W. BANDY was born in Roanoke, Virginia on August 4, 1877, but died when still a baby. OAKLEY WANLESS BANDY was born in Roanoke, Virginia on May 23, 1879. He raised a family of ten children. ROZETTA LEE (always known to us as Aunt Zet) was born in Roanoke, Virginia on May 13, 1881. She only had one son, Ralph Harris, who was a doctor. Her husband, Ralph Harris, migrated from Naws, Russia, arriving in this country with only the clothes on his back. They got their start in a little store in Dumont, Iowa which grew into a large business. Later they moved to Chicago, Illinois where they owned a large department store. Grandma Bandy (Mary Susan) lived with Aunt Zet and Uncle Ralph after Grandpa Bandy (Lewis Allen) passed away, until her death on December 5, 1935. OSCAR W. was also born in Roanoke, Virginia on May 17, 1883. He passed away in Huron, South Dakota, where he was Section Foreman for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. He raised a family of four children, most of whom still live around Onida, South Dakota which was their home for several years. IDA LEW was born in Allison, Iowa on November 28, 1885. She had three daughters, Rubye, Jeanette, and Mary, also one son, Roy. ARLIE W. was born in Dumont, Iowa on November 28, 1887. WILLIAM MATHEW, the youngest boy of this Bandy family, was born in Dumont, Iowa, on May 18, 1893. He was close to the ages of myself, Vernon and Gerald, so he was more like our older brother. He died during World War ll in Burbank, Callifornia where he lived most of his married life. His wife, Grace moved after his death to Redlands, California, as did their only son, Earl, and his family. MYRTLE I. was born in Dumont, Iowa on June 20, 1894. She only lived a few months and I do not know the caruse of her death on August 4, 1894. INEZ M. was born in Dumont on February 6, 1903 and she was someone very special. She was a fair haired pretty little girl and the picture of health, but when she was five years old she contracted measles, then pneumonia, and passed away on May 1, 1907. In June 1962 I visited the Dumont cematery where Grandma and Grandpa Bandy are buried. Near their graves was Inez, and there was another tombstone marking Myrtle's grave. * * * Grandpa Bandy was a taskmaster, for he demanded the best from his children. I remember one story in particular when my father and Uncle Oak disobeyed Grandma. When Grandpa returned home from work he said, "All right, boys, hop onto the hand car - we're going to the woods!". Both boys thought he planned to take them out in the woods to kill them; instead, he made them gather a handcar full of wood and then they had to chop it all when they returned home. (Note: Would that many parents had the opportunity to use this same system today!) Grandpa always had a nice high swing for the children and it seemed to me it was 50 feet high, for the swing was suspended on two telephone poles -- good and sturdy, too, with a big thick rope. One very pleasant incident that happened at Grandma's house and left and indelible mark on my mind was at Christmas time. I was told that Santa had left a gift for me on Grandma's bed but I wouldnn't go into the bedroom alone because I thought Santa was under the bed. At that time we had a large brown dog which I adored, so I took him with me. There on the bed was a large doll; it must have been as tall as I was. Many years later when I related this story to my mother she said, "Why, you were only two years old when that happened !". I still have the china head of that doll. On September 26, 1909 (the following year after Inez died), there was a big double wedding in Grandma's living room. Uncle Oscar and Aunt Bertha, and Aunt Ida and Uncle Roy Harmon. I was 7 years old then, and very imprssionable age, and to this day I don't believe I have ever seen two more beautiful brides. All four stood in the northeast corner of the flower decked room and pronounced their marriage vows. The room was crowded with relatives. Of course, the conventional wedding dinner was served later. Uncle Oscar and Aunt Bertha made their departure for their homeymoon by horse and buggy, not knowing they had a stowaway in the back of the buggy, namely Vernon Bandy. After they had traveled several miles they heard some snickering, stopped to investigate and needless to say, after some very strong language by Uncle Oscar, the culprit was given his orders to walk home. * * * Grandma Mary Susan Bandy's obituary reads: 'Mrs. Bandy confessed her faith in Christ in a meeting conducted by Reverend William A. Sunday and was united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Dumont. The pall bearers at her funeral were Dr. A. K. Meyer (Nera Bandy's husband), Vernon Bandy (son of Eldridge) and Oakley, Marvin, Donald and Merle Bandy (all sons of Oakley Bandy Sr.) Note: Reverend Sunday is, or was better known as "Billie Sunday". * * * One last note about the Bandy family. I have searched in the geneological records in the Newberry Library for more information but all to no avail. However, Cousin Nina Bandy sent me a not written by a pen pal in Israel which said, "Do you know you name 'Bandy' is one Hungarian name? One of the famous violinists, the King of Hungarian folklore music master was B^ohm Bandy! It was in the Auic of the late Emporator Francios~Joseph l (first World War)." So at least we do know the name Bandy is authentic, but it certainly would be difficult to trace any of our family band to Bohm Bandy. However, let's not discount the violinist statement, though, for after all, we do have violinists Helen Bandy Knabe and Marilyn Carroll Shepherd, don't we?

Person-Note* | COPY OF A LETTER WRITTEN BY SAMUEL OVERTURF TO HIS SON, WILLIS. (note from Donna O'Neill - the spelling in this letter is as in the original, not typing errors). October the 14 1883 W.M. Overturf My dear son; I wrote you a week ago and sent to the office with a man. We sent 3 leters with him but I think he kept the money and did not put the leters in the office. Well I met with a creius accident a week ago. We was about to go and spend the day with Rhoda and Alma and I went to put the horses in the field and put Kit and Polley in and went and got Grey and was leading him and he jumped and bit me in the cide and nocked me down. It is something he never don before. I am getting around now but I am not able to work yet. But how I wish you were here or could be here to help Osler pick his corn. I intend to go home with Alma in a week from tomorrow if I am able. There will be no trouble about that plase of your unless Alma says that Johnson has left the plase and has gone to Michigan. He said he would not contend with the acres. There is nobody on the plase now and so you see there is no good property for us. I rote you in my other letor if you could send me 10 or 15 dolars. But if you did not get that letor you cannot cend it in time to me to get it before I start. But if you have it to spare you can send it to Osleer. I shall want 30 dolars to take me to Pa. and you and him for it. I intend to be back by the first of March if all is well. This is Tuesday. I will take this to ofice today. Osler does not intend to go up where you are. He wood like to go but his wife would not agre to go. But I intend to go up when I get back and so I want you to look me up a good piece of land. One that will suit you. I wish I had Grey and Polley there. As ever your father Sam Overturf NOTATION BY VIRGIE BANDY CARROLL: "I remember my father and mother talking about acquiring land in South Dakota before the 1900's and early in the 1900's. all one had to do was make an application to the government for land which was designated by the government. Then the Claimee was required to live on said land for two months out of each year and the land would be theirs. Papa and Mama considered this but decidid against it because of Papa's work on the railroad and if Mama lived on the land, it would require a separation of those two months. this fact of acquiring land probably relates to the last paragraph of Sam Overturf's letter above."
