My father was born in Vermont near Rutland on a mountain farm September 1st, 1834. He lived to be a little over 80 years old and died September 23rd, 1914, pn his home ranch near Lockford, Calif. I believe that I have mentioned before that father was a strong and well proportioned man; his weight during his active life 175 to 180 pounds. He was about 6 fett tall and always carried himself erect. His walk was always quick and active. Father was a blonde with steel blue eyes and light brown hair. In early times father wore whiskers like most of the men during the Lincoln time, and his whiskers were dicidedly of the sandy color. He served two years in the Northern Army during the Civil War and received and Honorable Discharge as a Corporal.

John Davis Sr., 1834-1914: Enllisted in Company K, 100th Illinois Infantry Volunteers August 7, 1862 at Joliet, Illinois; served as Corporal to July 21, 1863. He fought in several of the important battles in the Tennessee Campaign. He was elected to several terms as County Commissioner of Aurora County, South Dakota, and was a member of the first Legislature of that state. He served several terms.

Martha died age 66, the 18 January 1903 of a heart attack, while staying with her daughter Rosa Pritchard in Gardner, Mercer County, West Virginia. She was brought by wagon in very bad weather, to the New Hope Church, Route 20, Mercer County, West Virginia (between Glenwood park and Princeton, West Virginia), where she is buried in an unmarked grave. She had sentimental thoughts of New Hope Church, so the family took her there. (Record of death certificate Mercer County, West Virginia courthouse)
