Person-Note* | HISTORY NOTES OF THE KNABE FAMILY by Donna Knabe O'Neill This writing is not fact, but taken from memory of happenings told to me by Aunt Marie, Margaret, and my father, Bob Knabe. I had some of this written down in small notes that I kept through the years. Gustaf and Augusta Knabe lived in Aachen, Germany before migrating to the United State. He owned or worked in a manufacturing plant that produced decorative slate pieces for the home. I have the last piece he made hanging in my dinning room wall unit. It is of an angel with a green slate background, small and quite beautiful. Aunt Marie gave it to me as a child, and I have hand carried it all my life with every move. It did not get packed with anything else, but sat beside me in every move in it's own container. Augusta was deaf, but a very loving mother. Grandpa and Aunt Marie always spoke of her lovingly. From everything I could gather, Gustaf was a strict taskmaster as a father with quite a temper. The family moved to the United States in 1884. Their eldest daughter, Augusta was 10 years old, and Marie was 8. There were 6 boys born to this family. Five died in infancy. Two were named Adolph, 2 were named Gustaf, and 2 Johannas Gotlieb. Mother Augusta was pregnant with the last Johannas Gotlieb (our Grandfather) when they arrived in the U.S. They settled in Castle Shannon, a small suburb of Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where he was born. Later he changed his name legally to John Goodlove, and was always called Jack (In business he was known as Jack G. or in the mining community - Big Jack). When little Jack was about 5 years old, the family decided to move back to Germany for his health. He had been a sickly child, and they felt he would do better with the food and environment in their home area of Aachen. They remained there for 5 years, and little Jack not only lived, but flourished into a healthy boy. While in Germany, at about age 17, Aunt Marie fell deeply in love with a young man from that area. She accepted his proposal of marriage and an engagement ring in secret, as her fater did not approve of him. She left the ring on at dinner one evening, and her father saw it. He went into a rage, tore the ring from her finger and threw it down the 'hole' in the outhouse, then forbade her to ever see the young man again. She was heartbroken, but an obedient daughter. She never married, but carried that love in her heart all her life (she told me about it when I was about 10 years old, and she was so patiently teaching me to knit and crochte). The family moved back to Pittsburg, PA. in 1894. The only documentation I have been able to come up with on this is showing Aunt Augusta, age 20 that states she was Prushen born in the state of Brandenburg in Germany, and came with no other family members at that time on the ship "Prussia" out of Hamburg, arriving in New York on July 10, 1894. I have found no other documentation of the rest of the family. Jack was 10 years old at the time, and Aunt Marie, 18. The story from the family was that Jack worked as a cabin boy on the return voyage to help with the cost of the passage. An accident happened just before they left Germany the 2nd time. Gustof was kicked in the head by a horse. He did not survive. I wish I had more documentation regarding the ancestors of our Great Grandparents, but have searched and searched to no avial. Please let me know if there is anyone reading this that can help with my research. | |
