Person-Note* | Jack was born in Castle Shannon, Pa which is a suburb of Pittsburg in Allegheny County. His mother was pregnant with him when they arrived in 1884. He spent his youthful years in Pittsburg except for the 5 years that the family returned to Germany from 1889 to 1894. In 1908 or 1909 he married Anna Mary Catherine Beck. She was born in Burlington, Wisconsin, and was about 22 or 23 years old when they married, and he was about 24 years of age. They moved to Souix City, Iowa were Jack Jr. was born, and 2 years later they were living in Wilmer, Minnestoa where Bob was born. They had a baby daughter after that that did not live. I don't know when they moved to Huron, So. Dakota, but that is where they were living when the divorced in 1925. Anna took her two boys and moved to California near her brothers and sisters that had settled mostly in the Pomona area. Jack Jr. was 15, and Bob was 13, and both were quite a handfull. Within a short time (a year or so), they were shipped back to their father to be raised with some dicipline that was needed at the time. From what I understand, their father was almost as stern a diciplinarian as his father had been, so it was not easy for the boys. Jack married another Ann. That marriage lasted a very short time. We have no information regarding her except that she was a concert pianist and quite a 'socialite'. In 1937 he married Margaret. Margaret was a young widow with a small daughter named Gretchen. He legally adopted Gretchen, and finally got the daughter he had longed for so many years before - plus 6 grandchildren between Bob and Gretchen. Five of them were girls. None of us grandchildren (and I am one of them) ever saw a stern moment from him - and could he ever give a hug! We could hardly breath for his wonderful hugs. Jack was a businessman. He opened a stationary store and typewriter repair shop in Huron. It was the first one west of the Mississippi. He had contracts to take care of all the typewriters and office machinery for the Government Offices and schools in 6 states as well as any private work that came in. He taught his son, Bob the trade, and the two of them worked together for years. Margaret worked alongside her husband in all their many business adventures. She was as diligent a worker as he, and the two made an unbeatable team. I've explained some about the Uranium mines in the Black Hills that they worked under the writings about her, but will talk here about the Mica mines. Mica was used for many years as a heat insulator. It was put into glass for furnaces to make it heat resistant, and used in walls in granular pieces to insulate homes. Mica is difficult to mine as it so fragile and in small pieces thru the rock. I remember going to the ranch in Custer, South Dakota at Thanksgiving time with my Grandfather, Margaret and Gretchen. There was snow on the ground, and the Mica in the rocks around was so bright it was blinding in the snow. When I was visiting at their home just a few months before he passed away, he was in bed because of illness, and stuck one foot out from under the sheets. I gasped, and said, "That's were Jenny (my daughter) got those feet!".... there is a thickness in the foot just above the toes that regular shoes will not go over. I had been having custom made shoes made for her since she started walking, and found out he had to have custom made shoes all his life because of it. It skipped 2 generations, and showed up in 2 of his great grandchildren.

Uncle Arl and Aunt Eva moved to Dubuque, Iowa and we would only see them occasionally, but it always seemed to me that Uncle Arl had a disposition very much like Uncle Bill had, sunny and with that good sense of humor. Susan Hayes
#833, b. 6 Jun 1888, d. 15 Dec 1957
Burial* | Susan Hayes was buried; Mt. View Cemetery, Pasadena, CA.
Person-Note* | Copy of letter written to brother-in-law, Fay and wife, Nellie Needham by Susie. Huron, SD Aug 7, 1945 Dear Bro & Sister, Am writing this at 4:30 A.M. When I can't sleep I get up and write letters and this is one of those nites. I get to thinking about the boys and I might just as well get up. Bill is in the Phillipines somewhere at present. Guess from what he writes he has been in several battles. He is in the Engineers. Was quite ill, was in the hospital for 23 days with dysentery. Lost 25 pounds but is back at work again now. Lloyd (Mildred's boy) is on an aircraft carrier. He was on that one that had the bow torn off in a typhoon. Guess he wasn't hurt but lost part of his clothes. Said they had to wear their life-belts for 25 hours. They had to bring the ship in for repairs and he had 21 days leave so he was home but we didn't get down to see him this time. Then after he went back Mildred had an operation for appendicitis. She got along fine and was to go home from the hospital the first part of this week. She didn't let us know anything about it for almost a week. They are always so afraid I will worry so that they tell me those things after they are all over with. A friend will stay with her until she is able to stay alone. Teddy is on a destroyer. Was fine the last we heard. I believe I wrote you that he was married Nov 27, 1942. He and his wife have a baby girl born June 16 this year (1945). She says the baby has red hair (curly) and blue eyes and looks just like her Daddy. He has never seen the baby yet. He is in the South Pacific. Vinton is at Fr. Waren, Wyo. near Cheyenne. He is in the quartermasters. At present is working in the Regimental Supply Office. Likes his job very well. Said he didn't know if they were going to keep him in there or not. He was in Alaska and the Aleutians for 31 months. Did Marian get the graduation card and hankie I sent her? Carol is in San Francisco. For a long time she was a streetcar conductor but became ill and had to quit. Guess she is O.K. now only is very thin and has very low blood pressure. Our family is sure scattered. Sure wish some of them lived nearer so we could see them once in a while. Won't it be a grand day when this mess is all over and families can be reunited again? Thayer says he begins to feel awfully old now that he is a great Grandfather. I tell him I don't, that I feel younger than ever. (isn't that foolish?) I was 57 just ten days before the baby was born. I had quite an accident a couple weeks ago. Was canning rhubarb, cold packing it and had some in a two pound coffee jar and when I took it out of the hot water and went to tighten the lid it blew off. Blew rhubarb all over the kitchen and me. If it hadn't been for my glasses, I guess I would have lost my left eye. a big gob of it hit my forehead and glasses, don't know how come they didn't break but didn't. A large burn on my shoulder, one on my left hand and my right arm was burned quite badly about half the arm from wrist to elbow. Still have to keep that bandaged but they are all healing nicely now. Guess I was just plain lucky that it wasn't any worse. Did I ever tell you I have diabetes? Have to take 30 units of insulin a day. Take it myself with a hypo needle. Have taken it for almost three years now. Not a very pleasant task, I can tell you. Thayer is feeling fine. There is a garage and gun shop in this same block where he hangs out. The man gives him $5.00 a week just to stick around and look after the office if he wants to go out or is busy at something. It gives him something to put in his time at. You wouldn't know to see him that he had ever had T. B. He weighs 165. We never hear from Achsah. About once a year from Fred. He is at Quatonia, Minn. Hear from Tom and Lyman once in awhile. Lyman is at Spirit Lake right now at their cottage. They wanted us to come down there but we don't have a spare tire and our tires can't be trusted very far so guess we won't get to go. Guess they are all well. We had to let our home go back. Couldn't keep up the payments when Thayer got sick. We have a very nice 3 room and bath apartment just one block from the P. O. Costs us $40.00 a month but we get $15.00 a month for janitoe service so makes our rent, heat & water for $25.00 a month so that isn't bad for right now. There's only one apartment up here besides ours and a sporting goods store underneath. Sure hope we can visit each other if this terrible war ever ends. We hope and pray that will be soon. Guess you are tired reading this scribbling so I better stop. Will see if I can sleep some more now. Answer soon if you find time. We enjoy your letters. Love, Susie & Thayer.
