Person-Note* | Copy of a letter written by Morris in 1957 to his Aunt Marjorie Bandy Greenwood. Saturday AM Dear Marge: I wrote you a letter from Spencer the other night but will write a longer one now... it's a chilly, rainy day out today so a good day to get a decent letter off. We have had over four inches of rain in NW Iowa the past ten days and it has been the slow type of rain that doesn't run off so everyone is very happy about it. Had a lengthy dry spell for quite awhile. Muriel and I have been planting grass and moving shubbery so this long rain is fitting in just right. First of all, about the kids. Mike is at the age now where he is thinking of girls and walks around with his head in the clouds all day and never hears a word that you say to him. Muriel will tell him something and within two minutes, he will ask her to repeat what she said. I'm getting so that I prefix all statements to the kids with the words..."now hear this..." and by gosh, it works; sometimes, anyhow. Mike gets good grades in school and seems to like to study; however, he seems a little slow at times in deciding exactly what he wants to do about something. By the time that he figures out how he is going to approach any given problem, one of the other kids has got it accomplished. Bill is getting more happy-go-lucky every day..... doesn't give two hoots for anything but camping out, building camp fires and the outdoor life. His eye sight is such that he will spot a snake in the grass fifty feet away... and he'll chase it until he catches it... then wants to keep it and make a pet out of it. Since we have not let the boys go to Barkers for the past couple of years, Bill's social adjustment has been perfect. His school work leaves much to be disired; but as long as he gets along so well with everyone, that's been the main concern of ours. Get him around a group of kids and he will get a little demanding at times, but for the greater part of his activities, he is doing fine. Connie Lee is the social butterfly.... is not home today as she stayed at a girl friend's house last night and will probably return around suppertime. She is a carbon copy of Muriel in looks; we have not cut her hair yet and she is the same light blond that Muriel is. She gets good grades in school, and dramatics are her forte. She is active in Brownies... M. is a den mother so the kids meet here at our place most of the time. We have a large empty lot with lots of trees, bushes, etc. and a barbecue pit so they meet around that when the weather is good and cook weiners, etc. I'm an honorary member of the Brownies, I'll have you know! Muriel taught the kids to square dance and its kind of jun to watch them as they are pretty good and sure put their hearts in it. Also with all these boys around here, there are not too many girls that have to go without partners. Eddy is proving to be the "strong-hearted" one of the group. He takes everything quite seriously and has his heart set on going to West Point someday. Usually that's a phase that a boy will go through and then it will end in a few weeks, but Eddy seems determined that he will be there someday. He will work like the devil in school on a given subject if we tell him that is what is needed to get to West Point. There is a neighbor out here who is the commander of the local Air Force jet squadron and he has taken the kids out to the field, let them play in a jet, etc., and for Eddy, that has been the crowning part of his life so far. Every time the commander drives by the house, Eddy will snap him a salute that will knock your hat off. What Eddy is working on now is a ride in a jet, but I doubt that he is going to make it. However, they also have a couple of C-47's and others which I wouldn't be surprised that he will get a ride in one of these days. Mark is going to be the opposite problem in school that Bill has been in that he starts kindergarten next year... and all ready can take the first graders book and read through it like a million dollars. He can count, knows the figures, alphabet, and can write and print as good as any seven year old that I have seen. Muriel and I have not done anything in so far as working with him, it has all been the older kids. They will bring a book home and Mark will be through it in no time at all. He demands to learn anything that he can't understand. The other day we had a clinical psychologist who is a personal friend visiting and while we were drinking a cup of coffee, Mark picked up a book from school, started to read, and the fellow asked what grade that he was in...told him that Mark hadn't started school yet and he couldn't believe it. Afterwards, I got to thinking that he probably felt it was a put-up jub to show Mark off, but it wasn't. Tron (the two year old) is going to be the wheel of them all. He will take nothing from anyone and is ready at the drop of a hat to back up his position with his fists. Is quite a bit like Hoop used to be at this age. Right at the present, he is proud of the fact that he never wets his pants. If he is outdoors, he'll not take the trouble to go behind a bush but would rather show anyone around how good he is at accomplishing his mission. The neighbors seem to get a little kick out of it but one of these days, someone is going to be embarrased because now his problem is to see how far out he can "send the stream"! He has a mind of his own; and if ther is one cookie or doughnut left over after the others all have theirs, that is his without any question what so ever. The other day a friend of Muriel's who has a five year old was here, and he wasn't going to let Tron sit on top of a bird bath with him (the bird bath had no water it it at the moment) so he kicked Tron in the nose to keep him off. Tron reached uyp, pulled the bigger kid off the bird bath, and had him down on his back knocking the daylights out of him by the time Muriel and Jean got out to separate them. As you can probably tell by all of this, there are not too many dull moments around here. We have probably been a little lax in the correction of the kids, but we'd rather see them have a good time and to heck with the rest. Our furniture show the above very easily but as long as it doesn't bother anyone, we aren't too concerned. All the kids are counting the days until they can go camping next summer. I don't know yet how far we can go primarily because of financing, and also the old Olds is not in too good shape. We are either going to have to get a Station Wagon or a school bus... frankly, if we keep up this camping deal, I'm beginning to seriously think that a converted school bus will really be the answer. Last year we went to the northern unit of the Bad Lands of South Dakota (Teddy Roosevelt's old ranch) and then on up to the Turtle mountain region in Canada...Lake Metigoshe. The kids read all about a region where we will be going, and then get that much more out of it when we are there. Also all the older ones have to keep a diary and account of the expenses... Those books from last summer are worth their weight in gold around here now. I was looking at Eddy's the other day and he had an entry for Bismark, North Dakota of 70 cents for pop.... "and Dad said we had enough"..... We took several colored slides last summer and viewing those slides has been one of the most enjoyable evenings during the winter. Kids will insist on three showings at the minimum. Bill and Mike each caught a wall-eyed pike..... Bill's was nearly 20 inches long and in the picture it looks impossible that he could have caught it but he did. He will make me hold the slide on the screen long enough until he has told everyone exactly how he did it. Muriel didn't know how she would like the camping principle and the night that we pitched the tent on the lake it was blowing a 40 MPH gale, raining, the temp was down to 35 degrees. But after it warmed up, she really ate it up and is ready to go again. You know, Marge, it is very difficult to tell you how much sorrow and sympathy we feel for you now. The best thing to know is that time alone will help in the hurt that you feel now. [Marge's husband, Allie had recently passed away] It is a difficult adjustment to make and the road is bumpy and hard, but you will do it OK because of the wonderful person that you are. Just one little piece of advice, Marge...... make no lasting decisions at the present, but rather let every day take care of itself. That is the best that I can give you for advise. I'll close now. We'll try to do a little better job of writing in the future than what we have done in the past. Tell Grandma and the rest all hello for us, and when you feel like it, Marge, drop us a line. the address is No. 9 - 38th St. and we'd sure like to hear from you; there is no hurry. lots of Love to you, Marge Morris.

Person-Note* | RUTH notes by Donna O'Neill Soon after Ruth moved into my home in 1997, I asked her to write down some of her history so that we might have it for future reference. She was with me until Oct. of 1999 when she moved to San Pedro, CA to be near her brother, Roger and his family. She remained in that area until she passed away from a massive stroke in Sept. 2001. Ruth wrote: I was born 6/26/23 in an apartment over the Huron Theater in Huron, South Dakota. Graduated from the Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA. 1940 - 42 - Long Beach Junior College 1942 - Dec 1946 Lockheed Aircraft - drilling - riveting (P-38's) (she, my mother, and Marge were all what was known in those days as "Rosie, the Riviter" at Lockheed. Feb. 1947- Los Angeles County Hospital - 3 years for R.N. degree 1950 - 51 U.S. Army San Antonio, TX 2nd LT. (nursing corp) Late 1951 - Dec 1956 Back to LA County Hospital Signed for U.S. Army Dec. 1956 to Dec. 1964 Overseas in Korea 1958 - 1959 Vietnam 1962 - 1963 (1st Lt. - Capt - Major) After Army nursing, she worked as an Industrial nurse for Whittaker Corp in Monrovia, Ca, and for Hunt & Wesson foods in Sonora and Oakdale, CA. She retired in 1979. She moved to a small home in Big Bear, CA near her sister, Opal for several years, then moved to Sonora, CA where she was a live-in nurse for an elderly woman for several years before moving to my home. in 1997. I wish I could remember all the many stories Ruth told me about her tour in Vietnam. I do remember her saying that her's was the first Medical Unit to arrive, and there were no buildings. They had a few Huts. One was for Surgery, one for the 'hospital', and one for the Nurses to sleep in. They had 'outdoor' toilets with a blanket around - not designated for either men or women, and a shower built with a bucket overhead to rinse (probably covered with blankets or whatever was available). She took in a pet. A dog she named Nah. The dog needed surgery, and she and a Dr. were caught using the Surgical Hut to do what was needed to save her. Dogs were a staple used by the Vietnamese for food, so when her tour of duty was ended, she brought Nah back home the the U.S. with her. I think of all the many pets Ruth had - Nah was her favorite. She really loved that dog. Ruth was always there when any family member or friend needed nursing care of any kind. She had a big heart, and gave a lot of herself into everything she did.

Person-Note* | Jim was born in Long Beach, California while his mother was on a short holiday. The family actually lived in Old River, CA. a small community that is now part of Taft, CA. He was the 2nd of 4 children. The family moved north to Berkeley when the children were quite small. As a boy he loved baseball, and joined the youth group of the Salvation Army Church in the neighborhood to play on their baseball team. He was an excellent student in school. After high school, Jim joined the Army. He served most of his time in India during WWll. He then went to college, and graduated from Berkeley with an Electronic Engineer's Degree. He married Carol, his high school sweetheart, and they had two lovely children, Kathy and Rob. Jim worked a short time at Lenkirk, then went to work for Lockheed in the space division, where his expertise was in space communication. He remained there the remainder of his life. The children were teenagers when their parents divorced. Jim and I (Donna), met 2 years later. We fell in love on our first date. I came home that evening, and told my mother I had just met the man I would marry someday. Well, a little less than 3 months later, it came true. Jim had an unbelievable personality. He was a gentle, generous, loving human being, that always put his consideration for others before himself. For instance, he handed my mother a gas credit card so she could feel free to go as much as she wanted, and if she didn't show up for dinner every eve., he would call and ask what time she would arrive. It was just his way. He was a real father to my daughter by a previous marriage, Jenny. She was just 9 years old when we married, and the adjustment was made easy by Jim. Jim did have his physical problems. He had a small heart attack in his early 40's, then 2 strokes. The last one was 2 years before he passed away, which left him unable to work. He passed away of Pancreatic Cancer, which was diagnosed 6 days before he died. He was dearly loved by so very many.
