Helen was born Dec. 5, 1909 in Huron, SD just after her parents bought the house at 518 Simmons Ave. She was the 5th of 7 children.

In her early teens, a friend of the family found an old violin in the attic, and gave it to her. That violin became her passion. When she played it, the tone was so mellow and sweet, it sounded as if it came straight from Heaven. It never sounded that way if anyone else played it. Her talents also extended to writing short stories and painting as evidence by some of her keepsakes amongst her belongings.

Helen, Virgie, and Gladys each had 2 years of college. This was at a time when few women went to College, and her mother was a widow. During her college years she taught classes of violin. There were about 28 students in her Fiddl-Ette (children's) class, and about 30 in her regular class.

After college, in 1927, Helen joined 2 other musicians (a pianist and a vocalist) to form the Ferrar Trio, and went on a summer tour of the midwest with a Community Concert Organization.

Helen met Bob while working in a laundry in Huron. She fell totally and forever in love with him, lasting even after their divorce. They married on June 24, 1934 in the First Congregational Church in Bradford, Iowa. This is the same Church that Dr. William S. Pitts wrote the song, "The Little Brown Church in the Vale" about in 1857 because the "spot where the Church sets is in such a setting of rare beauty" according to Dr. Pitts's own words.

Helen taught violin most of her life, and played as a soloist, in an ensemble, or in an orchestra for church, weddings, social gatherings, and rest homes which really brightened everyone's lives. She became president of the Wednesday Music Club (a South Dakota State Music Organization) 1948 - 49. In later years she played 2nd violin chair in the San Jose Symphony Orchestra in California.

Due to Macular Degeneration, she lost her eyesight at around age 70, as did her brother, Vernon, and sister, Marjorie. After that, her violin playing was restricted to family gatherings.

We lost our dear, sweet Mother from a massive stroke on July 12, 1988.

by Donna O'Neill and Joan Gordon

Bob (never known as Robert), was born March 31, 1912 in Wilmer, MN. He was the 2nd of 2 sons. When his parents divorced, he moved to Los Angeles with his mother for 2 years, then was returned to be raised by his father in South Dakota.

He was exceptionally adept mechanically, be it auto repairing, electricity, carpentry, and of course, typewriter repair, which he did most of his adult life.

About 1946, he bought a house for the family in Broadland, SD for $200. It had been partially torn down by the locals in the area. He rebuilt parts (using the same lumber), finished other parts, and completely wired it for electricity - and passed the state inspection. ( I, Donna, worked along side him thru all the rebuilding, and learned so very much from him. The other girls said I was his favorite, but they didn't mind, as I got stuck with all the work). After moving the house 18 miles over dirt roads into Huron, he built an apartment in the basement. When they sold the house 7 years later to move to California, it sold for $10,000.

Our father was full of fun and pranks. He would short sheet our beds, tie our pajama's in knots, put a fake snake in our bed, etc. Fun, but not harmful.

Bob was very psyshic from an early age. For instance: When in Jr. High School, he saw my mother, Helen, and said a voice told him -"That will be your wife someday", and he replied -"and who wants a wife". (age 13) When his eldest daughter, Joan was still dating her prospective husband, he said something about "Joan and her 2 boys".

Also, he was feeling the effects since about the beginning of puberty of mental illness which exhibited itself off and on through most of his life.

After many years working for the government as a typewriter and business machine repairman at the base in Alamogordo, New Mexico, he retired in El Paso, TX until he passed away from a heart attack on Dec. 4th, 1967.

Person-Note* 'BERT'
by Donna O'Neill

George Herbert Estabook, known to all of us as 'Bert', was a highly intellegent man. He became a drafter and at an early age worked for Lockheed Aircraft, then Lockheed Space Division. He was well known within the government as the one that developed the first coating to go on spacecraft. He became one of the three main bosses of Lockheed Missle and Space Division in Sunnyvale, California.

He did marry at an early age to a woman named Ruth. Last name unknown. They divorced in the late 1960's. He then married my Aunt, Marge Bandy Greenwood, and they lived the rest of their lives in a dream retirement until he became too ill to remain home, and had to go into a nursing home the last couple of years of his life.

Bert was an avid sailer. Always owned a sailboat, and loved to race on the water. He and Marge spent 6 months at one time bringing a 50' sailboat around from the Florida coast to just north of San Francisco, California for a friend of his. They sailed up thru the waterways of Canada, down to Mexico, and they were both in their element on the water.

He also had a hobby of photography, and his photographs were outstanding. Needless to say, when he did anything, he did it to perfection.

Bert and Marge started their honeymoon with a small motorhome, trailing a boat (the 'Why Not'), and they sold their last RV which was a 5th wheeler just months before he was unable to travel anymore.

Person-Note* MARGE
by Donna O'Neill

Marge was the youngest child born to Eldridge and Ivia Bandy. She admitted to being 'spoiled' by the family, but in later years, she did the spoiling of not only her mother, brothers and sisters, but the many nephews and neices that were her only children.

She said all her brothers and sisters were talanted with either music or artistic talent, but all she could do as a child was sit on the floor and play the radio. She had a happy childhood, and grew up to be a lovely woman in thought and deed.

She was always hyperactive, and got things done. She went to work for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. at an early age, and remained with them until she retired in 1971. She started out as a 'Rosie the Riviter' during WWll, and then became a secretary which was the work she did the rest of her working years.

Marge married Allie Greenwood and the two of them led a happy life first in the San Fernando Valley in California, then when Lockheed opened up their new facilities in the Santa Clara Valley in Sunnyvale, California they both transfered. Allie had diabitas for many years, and succumbed to it in 1957. She remained a widow for the next 14 years during which time she took in her mother, Vernon (her brother), and Helen (her sister) to live with her in her lovely home in Santa Clara, CA. She bought a cabin by Lake Anderson, and the whole family used it, and enjoyed it.

In about 1960 she had a boss that she didn't like [Bert Estabrook]. He was one of the 3 main bosses of Lockheed. She said he was so stern, and a real 'pain' as a boss. She worked for him for several years, then after she had gone on to another 'boss', she became acquainted with him on a personal basis, and in 1971 fell in love, and married him. They both retired when they got married, even though they were both in their 50's, and spent the next years with one of the nicest retirements I've ever heard of. They both loved to sail, & camp, and they enjoyed life to it's fullest.

In about 1995, Bert needed the care of a nursing home. They were living in Anacortes, Washington. She spent the next two years going to that nursing home every single day at least once a day. When he passed away, she was lost. She only lived a few months after that, and although they said she had a massive stroke, I believe she died of a broken heart.

Marge was fun loving, generous, and loved dearly by the whole family.
