Person-Note* Homer Davis, B.S., M.S., M.D., F.A.C.P., Graduate of South Dakota State College, Iowa State College, University of Nebraska and held a Teachers' Life Diploma. He seerved as Superintendent of Schools and Conductor of Teachers' Institutes four years. He served as Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps of the army, also in the Medical Corps, U. S. Army World War l as a Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel. Served juring his years as a practicing physician as Councellor for Nebraska State Medical Association several terms. Also served as President-Elect and as President of the Nebraska State Medical Association.

Dr. Homer Davis left our family a wonderful legacy in the form of a book titled "HOMER DAVIS MEMOIRS" giving history of both the Davis and the Overturf families.

INTRODUCTION

I, Homer Davis, was born june 13, 1868, in Will County, Illinois, the son of John Davis and Albina Overturf Davis. This memoir is written at the request of my son, Kenneth S. Davis, M.D. I trust that my family will enjoy knowing the history and background of our family.

I especially hope that it will be an encouragement in times of distress or the critical times of decision as to what course to pursue. My good wife was with me for over sixty years and whom I shall refer to as Mother; was a wonderful companion and a good sport and advisor, always giving me encouragement during the depressed periods of my life. It is to Mother that I firmly believe I should give the credit for my attainments in what the world calls success in life.

"A Tribute to Homer Davis"

Dr. Davis, now ninety-five
Is still going strong and is much alive,
Writing books and recording the past,
Telling tales that leave us aghast--
For instance, in the blizzard of '88
To keep his scholars from a starving fate,
He considered boiling his cap of fur--
The thoughts of it made quite a stir.
The only light was the open door
Of the pot-belly stove --how the fire did roar!
Nothing has daunted this noted man
Since his life of service to all began.
Great honors have been given him for unusual deeds
In the various work in which he succeeds.
From digging ditches and cutting hair
He jumped to putting up grains at the fair--
Raising chickens and teaching school . . . .
How thankful he was that the whip kept cool.
As superintendent he won acclaim,
Then leader of institutes brought him fame.
As doctor and surgeon he won titles galore
Until we wondered what next was in store--
And then the book of his life came out . . .
"Hurrah for Dr. Davis", his friends all shout.
His faith in God, his hope and good cheer--
All make him a friend who is held very dear.
