Person-Note* | NOTES REGARDING OVERTURF FAMILY by Virgie Bandy Carroll The following information was narrated to me by Grandmother, Helen Francina Overturf Needham, who was very anxious that coming generations could be told about their forefathers. "My great grandfather was a Lord in Germany. He and his wife had four children, 3 boys and a girl. After his wife died he planned to come to America and then return to Germany. (Note: There was a law in effect in Germany which stated that after 100 years, if one had left their property to go to another country, it was compulsory to return to Germany and reclaim that property in person.) I remember hearing my grandmother refusing to let my grandfather return to Germany because at that time traveling, or in her words, ' The trip is so perilous I will not let you go. Having you and knowing you are safe is worth more than all the land in the world.' So this land, after the 100 year period, was confiscated by the State of Germany." "While on board ship, he was murdered and presumably thrown overboard. The captain seized their chest of gold and trunks in which there was money and fine clothes. When they reached America, the two smaller brothers were 'bound out', which meant they were taken in by a family to care for them -- there were no adoptions in those days. The oldest boy, who was only 16 years old, was told to take the blind sister and go where he wanted. It wasn't known for years where they went." Another time Grandmother Helen Needham told me: " When I was in my early 20's I contracted tuberculosis and the doctor told my parents if they did not take me to live in the open air I would die. My parents got a covered wagon and traveled westward for several months somewhere in the vicinity of Denver, Colorado. When we returned to Dumont, IA, which by the way was not yet incorporated as Dumont -- the area about 4 miles north of Dumont was incorporated as 'Pilltown' and was later named 'Needhamville'. Later, the populous moved south to Dumont where a Dr. Dumont had purchased the land and built several homes, including his own home. Gradually, Pilltown and Needhamville were not longer there as villages; Dumont became the prevailing town. I was cured of the tuberculosis and I then married Melville Needham on December 17, 1875. I was one of the first teachers in Butler County, Iowa. I had an interesting experience with an overgrown pupil who did not cooperate with me and was trying to disrupt the classes (I taught the 1st through the eighth grades). In exasperation, I appealed to four other boys in the class and told them they should get him down on the floor. Not long afterwards, he started making trouble again and I told the other boys I was ready. They pounced on the bully and held him down while I whipped him with a stick. After that he was a good pupil and cooperated." As many will remember, Grandma Helen Needham was a very small person, not weighing more than 95 lbs., but her will and determination were demonstrated in the above incident. When Grandpa Needham was alive, his interest in her hobby of painting oil pictures was as keen as hers. He always found beautiful pictures on calendars to bring home to her because he knew she loved them. If the house looked cluttered with occasional stray newspapers, he never became impatient and he was always kind and understanding. Grandma Needham's two sisters, Rhoda and Albina were also artists in painting landscapes and waterfall scenes. CONTINUING INCIDENTS IN GRANDMA HELEN NEEDHAM'S LIFE BY GRANDAUGHER, VIRGIE BANDY CARROLL When Helen and Osler were young they attended singing school. In this school they learned the Do-Re-Me-Fa-Sol method and they sang hymns. All her younger days were spent teaching, either in the school in which she taught, or leading the choir in the Methodist Church in Dumont, and she was an active member in other activities in the Church. She was also a past Noble Grand of the Rebecca Lodge in Dumont. She was true, however to her Quaker home training, never deviation from the parental training. | |
