Father | Jeremiah Needham b. 20 Feb 1766, d. 1 Nov 1846 |

Person-Note* | NOTES FROM Brøderbund WFT Vol. 15, Ed. 1, Tree #3206, written by James M. taylor: "Benjamin Cooley Needham is the author of "Great Grandfather Needham's Family History". Benjamin Cooley Needham, son of Jeremiah Needham and Ruth Cooley, was born in Pittsford, Rutland, Vermont on August 17, 1794. He served in the U.S. Army during the war of 1812 and was under British fire while serving with a scouting party at the Battle of Plattsburg. He married Achsah Thayer on March 17, 1814 and they located in Wilmington, Essex County, New York. His wife Achsah died and he married Lois Huntley on February 22, 1821. He and his wife Lois moved to Pittsford, Vermont and occupied a house which stood near the bank of the creek, some forty rods south of the house which had been the residence of Colonel Benjamin Cooley. In June 1856 he settled on Section 9 at Boyland's Grove in Pittsford Township, Butler County, Iowa and opened a farm. He gave the township its name after his Vermont birthplace. Benjamin built the first store building and was the first merchant in Parkersburg. In the summer of 1865 he put up a large frame building(30 x 40 feet) near the depot, and he stocked general merchandise. He served his patrons in that location until the time of his death. For many years after his death the building was used as a tenement house. After he moved to Parkersburg he built three houses after the age of 72. His obituary states that he was rugged mentally and physically as the hills of his native state of Vermont. He was liberty loving. There was no place in his nature for intolerance in statecraft, theology or social ethics. Giving as he did his time to check British arrogance, and his youngest son to the nameless graves of Andersonville for our Nationality. There was no place left for puritanical narrowness of creed, temperate, frugal and industrious, his life was an example of genuine Christianity. He died September 17, 1880 at age 86 years 1 month in Parkersburg, Iowa. He is buried in a gravesite North West of Parkersburg, Iowa in an old cemetary on the Griner Farm along with his wife Lois Huntley." | |
