Alanza was a farmer and ran a sawmill. He was a very God fearing man who built the Alleghany Methodist Church and was the superintendant of Sunday School for years. He also served on the local Board of Supervisors and was active in politics. He built his family a very large house which is still standing and quite a prize.

One story told by his daughter, Emma was that their house was the first in the community to have a shower, however, it was on the front porch and the water was cold. He took a cold shower every morning on the front porch even in the winter. Virginia has some really cold winters.

Another funny thing is that he had 7 girls and 1 boy. He wanted boys so bad that he stuck several of his girls with boys middle names. Emma was a true Southern Belle and never allowed anyone to discuss her middle name.

Aunt Augusta worked with problem children at the Heidleburg University after arriving back in the U.S. at age 20, then spent 27 years teaching privately the children of aristocrates and the wealthy. She loved her work. she never had children of her own, so these children were her 'kiddies'.
At age 45 she married John Schweizer. He was about 17 years her senior, in a wheel chair, and mostly a very disagreeable person that needed someone to care for him.

She had a heart attack at about age 50, which left her left arm very weak, and took away a lot of her stamina.
