Birth*24 Dec 1834 Eliza Davies , daughter of Joseph Davies and Elizabeth Hayden, was born on Wednesday, 24 Dec 1834 at High Street, Deptford, Kent, England; Eliza Davies the eighth and last child of Elizabeth and Joseph Davies married her father's pupil, James Henry Nelson in 1853. They lived at Deptford. He was a seaman and returned from a voyage to Singapore suffering from dysentry, and died at the age of 49, leaving her to bring up a large family. She supported them be sewing fine shirts by hand. She and her children moved to 25 James Street, Plaistow, about 1870, she lived there for 50 years. She then went to live with her daughter Jinnie at Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk where she died at the age of 91 years, and is buried in the churchyard there. She is remembered by various Grand-daughters as an old lady wearing a bonnet covered in pansies, and her cape. She was a very strong-willed person. Many of her Grand-children have confessed to being somewhat in awe of her. Anyway she is something of a legend. I am proud to have a dim memory of her myself. Only eight years of age at the time of her death, my picture of her, is a bent old, (very old) lady, who leaned on my arm. Small wonder she was known as LITTLE GRAN. (Tom Martindill).2,3,4,5
