Note* | Henry worked about 45 years at the India Rubber Gutta Percha works as a fireman, engineer, and later foreman of the boilers and engines. He lived on the firm's premises at Silvertown, London E.16. His first wife later became an alchoholic. James, Lilian and Harry all died from diptheria, within weeks of each other. Was this responsible for their Mother taking to drink? It seems possible. [DB: they lost 4 young children, 2 in 1886, then one in 1894 and another in 1902]. They separated, with him making her an allowance. She ended her days in a mental home. Later he married his cousin Jane Scott (Refer to page 4. No.4). She was a cookery teacher working with the London School Board. Around 1922 they retired and went to live at Wansford , Northants, but around 1935 returned to live in the London suburb of Charlton. At the begining of the Blitz on London they stayed with Clara, his young sister at her home in Peterborough. Later they again returned to Charlton, and sometime in 1941 or 1942 the flat was bombed, he was taken to hospital. After this he and Jane went to live in Southampton, both are buried there. Jane died in 1945 and Harry in 1946. There were six children of the first marriage of whom only two survived their parents. It apears that there were no grandchidren.5 | |
