She was but six months of age when she came with her parents to Canada from Beekinghamshire, England where she was born in 1841. In 1858 she was married to Wm. Gemmill at White Lake, Canada. In 1871 they came to Iowa and settled in Keokuk county where they lived ten years before coming to Grand Junction. There were twelve children born to them, one boy dying in infancy. Besides the bereaved husband, there remain four sons and seven daughters to mourn the loss of this devoted wife and grand good mother, all living in this vicinity. The boys are William, John, Duncan and Hammell. The daughters are Mrs. Mary Jane Brown, Jesse Holmes, Isabella Brown, Anna E. McLain, and Kate Young all of Grand Junction, Margaret Johnston of Paton and Nora E. Cross of Lavina. Mrs. Gemmill died Wednesday evening June 17 from nervous prostration, after an illness of three years, during the last ten weeks she was confined to her bed. She united with the Presbyterian Church in Canada soon after her marriage and was a faithful Christian. She devoted her Christian effort mainly to the home. That she raised so large a family, ____ and _____ them all for Christ is the highest tribute we can pay her. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church on Friday.)5 |
