"When the Wild Rose blooms I think of you.
A token sweet of days gone by.
When our hearts were young and love was new
And the Spring sun shone in the sky.

But flowers fade and petals fall.
The chill winds freeze the truest heart,
And the pain of love lost is unbearable
When roses die and lovers part.

But the love in a long dead rose still burns
And can be reborn and start anew.
And each new year when the Spring returns
When the Wild Rose blooms, I'll think of you.

by John Charles Darvell.

Death*15 Dec 1909 William H Gemmill died at age 74 , Grand Junction, IA on 15 Dec 1909 (From the Grand Junction Highlight, Tuesday, December 21, 1909

William Gemmill
William Gemmill was born in Scotland October 22, 1835, and died at his home in Grand Junction, Iowa, December 15, 1909. Age 74 years, one month and 21 days.

In the summer of 1842 when a mere boy, his parents left the homeland and came to Ontario, Canada, where he resided during the years of his boyhood, and grew to maturity. It was here that he met the one who was to become his companion during 45 years of his life, October 4th. 1858, he was married to Elizabeth Bandy, with whom he lived until the time of her death, which occurred in Grand Junction. Twelve children came to grace the home of these parents, of which number ten are still living. One child, a son, died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Anna McClain, was laid to rest in the cemetery here a year ago last January. The names of the living children are as follows: Mrs. Mary Brown, Keokuk, Iowa; Mrs. Jessie Holmes, Perry; William Gemmill, Keokuk county; John Gemmill, Boone county; Mrs. Belle Brown, Dana; Duncan Gemmill, Rippey; Mrs. Maggie Johnson, St. Joseph, Missouri; Mrs. Nora Cross, Grand Junction; Hammel Gemmill, Boone county; and Mrs. Kate Young, Grand Junction. In April of the year 1871 Mr. Gemmill and family moved from Canada and took up there residence in Keokuk county, Iowa. Here they lived for ten years, coming in March 1881, to this town, where he has since resided. In June 1903, he was bereft of his companion and she was buried in the city cemetery, where his body will be laid to rest. May 1,1905, he was united in marriage to Mary Chandler. This union proved a happy one, both to the contracting parties and children. One of the sons said the other day, "Mrs. Gemmill could not have been kinder to me had she been my own mother, and I shall always have a warm place in my heart for her because of her devoted love shown for my father."
Mr. Gemmill was a Presbyterian and believed in that church with all his heart. He came of Presbyterian ancestry many generations back, and became a member of this denomination when a young man, and remained a member to the time of his death. He was an official member of the local church. His sickness was of about three weeks duration, and his death came as a result of Bright's disease. It had always been his wish that he might have all of his children about his bedside when he breathed his last, as they had been present with their mother, and the good Lord saw fit to grant this request, and much of the loneliness of the last hours was dispelled by their comforting presence. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, ten children, 23 grandchildren and one great-grand child. All of the children were present at the funeral, and the following relatives, and friends from out of town: John Gemmill, South English; Duncan Gemmill and wife of Elliott; Mrs. Jennie Willis of Fairfield, Nebraska; brothers and sisters of the deceased: H. H. Gemmill, Dallas Center; S. B. Robinson of South English; Rob Clark and wife of Paton; Rob Johnston of Seranton; and Charles Brown of Ames.
