Note* | We know very little about William Bandy. Where exactly he was born in England is also not known as records are apparently lost like those of his father. Upon his arrival in the colony, he attended school at Freshwater Bay and later at James Street when the family moved to William Street. He was apparently musically gifted and was given special tuition by a teacher who realised his potential. He preferred the trumpet but, by all accounts, he could play the piano equally as well. After leaving school, he sought employment in the Moore River district and was employed by Joshua Edwards at the junction of the Moore River and the Gingin Brook, minding cattle. He had to give evidence at the trial of John Death, who was standing trial for the murder of an aboriginal child at Gingin. In the newspaper "Inquirer" on 17 October 1860, it was reported that the man had deliberately placed 'Strychnia' in some flour which was taken from his camp by aboriginies and eaten. Evidence was given at the Quarter Sessions in January 1861 that John Death had been aggravated by the pilfering of his supplies of tea, sugar and flour from his hut whilst carrying out his duties as cattle minder for Joshua Edwards. One day he went to Perth knowing that an aboriginal tribe was camped nearby. During his absence, a bag of poisoned flour was stolen. Biscuits were made from this bag and a little boy aged 11/2 years ate this and died. A dog which had also eaten one died also. Death had placed a notice outside his hut with the words "NOTICE, POISON FLOUR MEAL", written in English - a warning of little significance to the aboriginies who could neither read nor write. However, whatever the verdict was is unknown. Death later drowned in the Gingin Brook whilst under the influence of liquor. Shortly after this episode, William received money from his mother in Singapore to pay his fare to that country in order to receive further tuition in music. It is not known how long he remained there before he went to New York and played his trumpet with the New York Symphony orchestra apparently with great success. He returned to Western Australia in the late 1880's and endeavoured to organise his own band, apparently with little success because he returned to Singapore soon after his father's death in 1896. Whether he died there or returned to the United States is unknown. He was instrumental in persuading his niece Florence, the daughter of his brother Thomas Amos to go to either England or America to undergo training of her voice for singing. She had a beautiful voice and after her debut, won instant success. Whether she married is not known, nor do we know whether William ever married. When he visited the home of George and Elizabeth, he was observed to have a jovial nature and pleasant speech. Much pleasure was given to the family while he played his trumpet and his expertise with the mouth organ was also a joy to listen to. |
