Note* | "My Grandfather was indeed James Charles Bandey, born 27th October 1872 at 146 Regent Street. His father was Francis Bandey, a printer pressman, ( we have some early prints which we believe he produced) married to Mary Ann Bandey nee Mynott. (as per copy of Birth Cert). James Charles had a sister called Amelia who in December 1879 was apprenticed as a cigarette maker to Nathan Bourman of Duke Street Hounsditch ( Indenture available). James Charles also had a brother called Frank or Francis who was killed by a stabbing incident when he was about 13 years old. Frank Bandey had started work in a music shop before he was stabbed by a boy and later died having developed pneumonia. With father and brother both dead at or near this time James Charles started work aged 12 on London Bridge station reputedly sorting newspapers for W H Smith & Sons from whom he eventually retired at the age of 63 due to illness after 50 years of service to the firm. James Charles met my Grandmother when manager of W H Smith & Son at Clevedon, Somerset and later moved to become manager of the Torquay shop. (Email from Martin Bandey 05-Jan-2006).1 | |
