Daisy Elizabeth Webb1
#41, b. 19 Aug 1910, d. 4 Apr 2013
Birth* | 19 Aug 1910 | Daisy Elizabeth Webb was born on 19 Aug 1910 at Kensington, MDX, ENG, .2,3 |
Note* | | DAISY ELIZABETH WILKINS Daisy was born to Harry and Daisy Webb on 19"' August 1910. She was brought up in the Kensington and Chelsea area with her sister Ivy and brother Harry. The children were born with a year between them, Daisy was the eldest. When Daisy was thirteen her father died and the family moved to New Barn Street in Plaistow to be near her mother's family. With the help of her aunts and uncles, Daisy being the eldest took over the role of little mother to her siblings as her own mother had to work to support the children. Daisy was a very bright and studious young woman and would have loved to have trained to be a nurse, but family circumstances prevented this. They were very poor and Daisy had no alternative but to ?nd work. At the age of fourteen Daisy started work. She had several different jobs over the years. She worked as a canteen assistant for a company in Canning Town, and at Lamson Paragon in Plaistow (Canning Town). She then worked in the offices of Sainsbury's in Chingford where she was trained as a First Aider. She also worked for a short period in a little cafe in Rainham. To arrive in time for the early morning shift, Daisy had to catch the very first bus of the day.
Daisy's brother and sister married, but Daisy stayed at home to care for her mother. During the war the family home was destroyed in a bombing raid. Luckily the family survived, but they lost everything, even the family's pet cat. They were rehoused in the Chingford Retreat for the Homeless. After several moves in the Plaistow area, Daisy and her mother were offered a one bedroom council flat in Genever Close, South Chingford. Daisy and her mother lived alone in the flat until Daisy married Frank Wilkins in March 1966. Frank had been a friend of the family for many years. Daisy and Frank slept in the lounge, while mother used the only bedroom. Daisy's mother's health deteriorated and Daisy cared for her until she died in 1973. After her mother died Daisy had time to herself and, encouraged by Frank, joined the local swimming club and exercise class. She also attended a church meeting on a Sunday and a social meeting on a Wednesday afternoon.
Daisy has always been a very kind and caring person, and has many friends. Daisy and Frank lived happily in the flat until Frank died in 1997. He had suffered failing health during the last few years of his life and Daisy tirelessly nursed and cared for him throughout. Sadly, Daisy's brother and sister died many years ago, but she has cousins, nieces and nephews, and many friends who are in regular contact with her. Daisy was a very bright and studious young woman and would have loved to have trained to be a nurse, but family circumstances prevented this. They were very poor and Daisy had no altemative but to ?nd work. It is a great shame because as time as shown, Daisy would have made a wonderful carer.
Extracted from Daisy's funeral eulogy prepared by her step daughter in law Joan Wilkins (edited by DB).4 |
