Simon 'Sy' Willis of Delta died April 4 at Horizon Care Center in Eckert. He was 95.
Graveside services were held on April 7 at Mesa View Cemetery with Larry Burns officiating.
He was born Dec 1 1910 in Delta to Alfred James and Elizabeth Caroline (Hammond) Willis.
He married Elsie May Hyatt on March 18 1933 in Delta.
He worked as a carpenter for many years helping to build Camp Carson (later known as Fort Carson) in Colorado Springs, Martin Mortuary in Grand Junction, Montrose High School, buildings at Mesa State College, the Meeker and Hamilton bridges and as well as many local residences in the Gunnison Valley and cabins on Grand Mesa.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie of Delta; a son Paul and Nina Willis of Eckert; a daughter, Maryetta Williams of Marble Falls, Texas; grandchildren, Mark, Aaron and Joseph Willis, David and Terrie Hinton and Pamela Williams; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

(Witness) Note | Sep 1940 | Mabel Louisa Willis witnessed the Note of Frank Willis and Hilda Alice Williams in Sep 1940; Bombed out of London during the Blitz which destroyed the family home at 45 Webb St Plaistow. They fled to Buckinghamshire on back of lorry borrowed by Will Dorsett. There they stayed with cousin Mabel in Hazlemere for a few days, then at Baptist Church Hall High Wycombe before ending up at Frieth Village Hall, where were fed & clothed by kindness of Frieth villagers and the local WVS. Offered farm cottage by at Parmoor, Greenwood, 2 miles away. Frank continued working in London until December 1940. He became the local 'Pru' agent until his retirement. Hilda lived in Stokenchurch, after Frank's death in 1964, until 1976. She then lived with her daughters, mainly Grace, until 1999 when she moved to Meadowside Residential Home in Marlow, following an accident. |
