Note* | Sep 1940 | Bombed out of London during the Blitz which destroyed the family home at 45 Webb St Plaistow. They fled to Buckinghamshire on back of lorry borrowed by Will Dorsett. There they stayed with cousin Mabel in Hazlemere for a few days, then at Baptist Church Hall High Wycombe before ending up at Frieth Village Hall, where were fed & clothed by kindness of Frieth villagers and the local WVS. Offered farm cottage by at Parmoor, Greenwood, 2 miles away. Frank continued working in London until December 1940. He became the local 'Pru' agent until his retirement. Hilda lived in Stokenchurch, after Frank's death in 1964, until 1976. She then lived with her daughters, mainly Grace, until 1999 when she moved to Meadowside Residential Home in Marlow, following an accident. in Sep 1940. |
Note* | 13 Jan 2002 | On Sunday 13th January 2002 around 100 members of Hilda Willis' family joined her in Frieth Village Hall to celebrate her 100th Birthday. A commemorative booklet was produced which included the following remarks: "This remarkable lady, mother of nine children, has lived through the greatest changes that mankind has ever seen. Born into the Edwardian world of steam, she has seen the development of radio, television, passenger aircraft, atomic energy, computers and most of the things that we take for granted today. She often lamented that, because of the war, she had lost her all-electric modern home in pre-war London to live in a country cottage with neither gas nor electricity, with no bathroom, where the only water supply was an outside tap and the lavatory was at the end of the garden. That was in 1940 and the cottage was in Frieth, the village to which all her family now return for this very special occasion. Hilda was born on 14th January 1902, the year after Queen Victoria died, at 18 Oban Street, Poplar, which backs onto the Bow Creek just off the East India Dock Road near Canning Town. Hilda was the sixth of eleven children of Alfred John Williams and his wife Hannah (nee Young). Hilda and her youngest sister Constance who was born on 20th September 1911 have outlived all of the other members of this large family. Hilda married Frank Willis, a "motor driver" at St Matthias Church, Canning Town on 21st May 1923. Frank had been born on 27th May 1900 in Plaistow, the fifth of nine children of Frank and Elizabeth Sarah Ann Willis (nee Rolph). Hilda and Frank also had nine children: Frank, Elsie, twins Philip (Pip) and Peter, Alec, Richard, Gracie (Gay), Henry and John. Sadly three of these children: Elsie, Richard and Pip have not lived to see her 100th birthday. She has 20 grandchildren, the number of great grandchildren is still growing and there are already several great great grandchildren. Hilda and Frank, with their youngest children still babes in arms, were bombed out of London at the height of the blitz in August 1940, when their home at 45 Webb Street Plaistow was destroyed, along with the rest of the street, by an aerial torpedo. Frank suffered from blast injuries as a result. Along with other members of their family they fled to Buckinghamshire on the back of a lorry that Frank's sister Aggie's husband, Will Dorset, had borrowed. After a short stay first with cousin Mabel in Hazlemere and then the Baptist Church Hall in High Wycombe they arrived at Frieth Village Hall to be greeted by an Honour Guard of Scouts and Guides. The family were fed and clothed by the kindness of the Frieth villagers and the local WVS. Charles Emmett, a local farmer, offered two farm cottages at Greenwood, two miles from Frieth, to the Willis family and other evacuees. The family were glad to accept and lived in the cottage for the duration of the war. Thus all the younger children attended Frieth School and St. John's Church. Frank continued working in London until December 1940 when, with several of the older children who had been evacuated first to Woodbridge and then Coventry in 1939, he returned to the village. The last child to return was their eldest son Frank, who whilst living in Frieth, had volunteered into the Royal Sussex Regiment in which his father had served in the First World War. He returned to the village in 1945 having been wounded at Monte Casino. During the war Frank Willis senior became a familiar figure as the local "Pru" agent travelling regularly through the surrounding villages on his trusty push bike, a role he continued until his retirement. Hilda, Frank and her family remained in the area around Frieth for many years. Frank died in 1964 and is buried in Frieth Churchyard. Most of her children brought up their families nearby and still live in this corner of Bucks. Her son Peter and his wife Margaret live in the village to this day. The many descendants of Frank Willis and his brothers and sisters hold regular family reunions. Over the last few years they have filled specially hired Thames riverboats on at least three occasions, the most recent in the summer of 2001 when they sailed from Marlow to Henley and back. After her husband's death Hilda lived in Stokenchurch until 1976, then with members of her family until 1999 when, following an unfortunate accident, it became necessary for her to move to Meadowside Residential Rest Home in Marlow." Hilda was at home at Meadowside to receive a message of congratulation from Queen Elizabeth, in the year of her Golden Jubilee, on Monday 14th January 2002. Hilda died on 16th March 2003 and was buried with her husband in Frieth Churchyard. on 13 Jan 2002. |

For nearly 20 years he was engaged in the trade between China and Australia, first as master of the Whampoa in 1883, then of Changsha, and eventually as commander of the Chingtu, to which vessel he was transferred about six years before his death. Captain Williams was regarded as an extremely capable and careful navigator, and during his lengthy connection with the China Navigation Company never had an accident of a serious character. He was popular with the shipping community and the travelling public. Captain Williams died on board his vessel at sea, and upon the arrival of the Chingtu at Townsville was buried at Brampton Island. He left three sons and one married daughter. Captain Williams, who was 63 years of age, had been in ill-health for some time past and, according to newspaper reports of the time had suffered from 'an affection of the heart'. Note* | 18 Aug 1902 | Brisbane Courier. 18th August 1902. Our Townsville correspondent wired last night as follows - Captain James Edward Williams, master of the steamer Chingtu, died at sea on Friday last, during the voyage of the vessel up the coast from Sydney direct. The captain had not been in good health for some time, the alleged disappearance of a Chinaman from amongst his crew contributing no doubt towards the worry. The vessel was anchored off Brampton Island. Boats were then lowered, and the body taken ashore and buried and a cairnstone, surmounted by a wooden cross, marking the site of the grave The crew, intend obtaining a handsome headstone, and erecting it on their return trip. The chief officer takes command for the remainder of the voyage The Argus Melbourne 18th August 1902. Captain J. Williams, master of the steamer Chingtu, died on Saturday, on the voyage up the Queensland coast. He had not been in good health for some time past and had been much worried lately through the disappearance of one of the Chinese crew, which gave rise to two of the engineers being arrested on the charge of murder. Captain Williams was buried on Brampton Island. Sydney Morning Herald. 19th August 1902. The Late Captain Williams. The late Captain James E Williams, commander of the steamer Chingtu, whose death was announced in our issue of yesterday, had been in the service of the China Navigation Company for upwards of 25 years, and was the commodore of the fleet For 15 years he was engaged in the trade between China and Australia, first as master of the Changsha, and then as commander of the Chingtu, to which vessel he was transferred about six years ago. The deceased mariner was regarded as an extremely capable and careful navigator, and during his lengthy connection with the China Navigation Company never had an accident of a serious character. He was popular with the shipping community and the travelling public, and was also held in high esteem by both of the conflicting sections of the Chinese. As stated in our telegrams yesterday, Captain Williams died on board his vessel at sea, and upon the arrival of the Chingtu at Townsville was buried at Brampton Island. He leaves three sons, one of whom is in South Africa, and one married daughter The deceased, who was 63 years of age, had been in ill-health for some time past, and had suffered from an affection of the heart. Captain Brown, the first officer of the Chingtu, has taken command. Northern Territory Times 22nd August 1902. Death of Captain Williams. We learn from Mr. J. C McDonald, the acting agent for the China Steam Nav. Coy. that from inquiries made he has small reason to doubt that the report circulated in town on Wednesday morning as to the sudden death of' Capt. Williams, of the steamer Chingtu, is too sadly true; So far as can be gathered he died off the coast of N.S. Wales not long alfer his vessel's departure from Sydney on her usual voyage to Hongkong. This news will be received with deep regret by his many friends both here and elsewhere. Captain Williams was a fine specimen of the older fashioned type of British sailor who are fast disappearing under modern conditions. He was a thorough seaman from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head, and hidden under a somewhat stern and crusty outer demeanour was as simple, true, and kindly a heart as ever beat. His love for his profession was proverbial, and it was somewhat of a joke a few years back that he should spend a six months holiday cruising about after pearlshell in a lugger he had had specially built for the venture in Hongkong, enduring with cheerfulness and a palpable enjoyment the inevitable hardships attending such a life. During his long life at sea Captain Williams had visited a great many parts of the globe, and seen most things that are to be seen, and when he chose he could tell some interesting stories It is not long since that Captain Williams had a serious illness in Hongkong, and quite recently he had had some worries in connection with his ship which he would probably feel more keenly than a man taking less pride in his profession. In his death the CN. Coy. lose the services of a skilful and cautious captain, and his friends the friendship of a loyal and true hearted man. The Melbourne Argus. 27th August 1902 Death Notice; WILLIAMS.-On the 15th August, at sea, in Lat. 22 deg. 23½ min. S. (off Queensland coast), of acute bronchitis, Capt. J.E. Williams, China Navigation Co.'s s.s. 'Chingtu.' Much esteemed during his long career in the China and Australian trade. Buried at Brampton Island on the 16th of August. Cross-examined by Mr. Bennallack - the window was not clasped within or without. The window was shut. Ebenezer TRIGGS - I am in the service of the coast guard at Portreath; on the morning of the 8th of August I went down to the vessels at the pier; saw the prisoners there; I met Lean coming from the pier, and he told me he was going to Swansea; I said that would be some expense to him, and asked him where he slept last night; he said at Mr. Garland's; I then went down to the pier, and saw Morgan on board "The Grace"; about ten minutes after, Lean brought down some beer and gave it to Morgan, and they drank and talked together; I went and told my master Took several objections to the indictment, all of which were overruled. The Chairman having summed up, Morgan was found guilty of Larceny, and Lean was acquitted." in Oct 1838 at Portreath, CON, ENG, .7 |

Note | 1877 | White's Leicester and Rutland Directory: EATON a pleasant village and parish, in Framland Hundred, in the vale south of the Wold hills, bounding the Vale of Belvoir, 81/2 miles N.E. by N. of Melton Mowbray, in that Union and County Court District, containing 382 inhabitants in 1871, living in 94 houses, on 2470 acres of land. The parish has a rateable value of £2400 9s. 6d., and the soil is various, being a fertile clay in the vale, and a red loam, with some little sand, on the hills. The Duke of Rutland is lord of the manor and owner of most of the soil, and the rest belongs pricipally to Thomas Sills, Nicholas E. Hirst, and John Rodgers, Esqrs., the two latter of whom, as impropriators, hold the land allotted in lieu of the great tithes, at the enclosure, in 1769. In the reign of Henry III. The church was appropriated to Leicester Abbey; and, until the Dissolution, Croxton Abbey, the Knights Templers, and Laund Priory had lands here. In 1086 Hugh de Grentemaisnell held the manor under the Countess Judith; and here was a wood, 160 perches long and 80 broad. Here is a mill on the main source of the Deven. The residence of George Gillett, Esq., is a splendid mansion, in the Elizabethan style, built in 1875, at a cost of £7000. The Church (St. Denis) consists of a nave, north and south aisles, and chancel, with a tower at the west end, containing four bells, and surmounted by a spire; the pillars and arches dividing the nave from the aisles, and also the tower, are in the Norman style of architecture, and on the north side of the church are some good specimens of Early English work. The living is a discharged vicarage, valued in K.B. at £7 11s. 2d., and now at £130, having 55 acres of glebe, mostly allotted in lieu of tithes at the enclosure, and partly purchased with £200 of Q.A.B., obtained by lot, in 1772. The patronage is in the Lord Chancellor; and the Rev. John H. Williams, M.A., the incumbent, has a good residence, erected in 1854. The WESLEYANS have a chapel here, built in 1823; and the WESLEYAN REFORMERS occupy a wooden building, erected in 1850. A School was built in 1874, at an outlay of about £260, in lieu of the old school-house, which has been converted into a cottage. The Church Close, 14A. 3R. 36P., let for £19, was allotted for the repairs of the church at the enclosure, when four acres were allotted for getting stone and gravel for the reparation of the roads, and for the use of the poor for herbage and fuel. These four acres are in two closes, let for about £5 per annum, exclusive of the gravel-pit, in which many human bones and the handles of coffins have been found. The poor have £5 15s. 3d. a year from the dividends of £200, three and a half per cent. Reduced Annuities, purchased with £200 left by Ann Bates, in 1822. The parish feast is on the Monday before June 17. Rev John Haddlesey Williams, M.A., Vicar, The Vicarage Eaton in 1877.8 |
