Chapter 3 North Carolina Links

Bandy households are first found in central North Carolina in 1752 and in western North Carolina beginning shortly before the first census in 1790.  Some members of the central North Carolina group moved to Georgia. Although there is less evidence, it is also assumed that some members of the western North Carolina group are descended from the central North Carolina group.

The central North Carolina group includes:

·                     James Bandy likely remained in North Carolina (discussed below).

·                     James Bandy, who  was younger than the first James, was married to Susannah, and they remained in North Carolina.

·                     Robert Bandy likely remained in North Carolina (discussed below).

·                     John Bandy (discussed below) lived in North Carolina. Perhaps he is the John who served in the Virginia militia (see Chapter 1).

·                     Solomon Bandy  (perhaps 71, 15-160) (1748 - ? )  possibly is Richard’s (71, 14-1) (July 8, 1722 - July 21, 1795) son  (see chapter 2) or possibly James’ son. Little is known of his fate.

·                     Lewis Bandy (136, 15-166) married Mary Barnes (136, 15-164) and moved to Georgia (see chapter 5).

·                     John Bandy  (148, 15-262) married Lavenia Woolf (148, 15-269) and moved to Georgia (see chapter 5).

The western North Carolina group includes:

·                     David Bandy  (16-931) (1760's - 1850's) married Mourning (discussed below). Although they moved to Tennessee for a while, they returned to North Carolina where they are assumed to have died.

·                     Bryant Bandy (after 1770 - after 1820) lived in North Carolina and moved to Tennessee where he married Nelly Hix (discussed below). She likely is his second wife. His first wife’s name is unknown.

·                     John Bandy is  listed in the 1820 Lincoln County census (discussed below). He possibly is the same John Bandy who lived in central North Carolina and the same John Bandy who married Elizabeth Hughs. Little is known of his fate.

·                     George Bandy  (192, 16-373) (1750 - June 1830) who married Christiana Slinkard (192, 16-374) (? - June 1830) likely is the son of Avy  Bandy (75, 14-38) of Cumberland County, Virginia. He moved first to Burke County and then to a part of Lincoln County which became Catawba County (discussed below).

·                     Jesse Bandy (15-487) (1760 - 1830's) married Charity, last name unknown (see chapter 4).  They also lived in South Carolina and Tennessee.

Although it is not entirely clear, it is likely that some members of these groups are related to each other and are descended from the Bannings of  Maryland and/or the Bandys of Accomack County, Virginia. It well could be the case that they are related to Richard and Avy. George is assumed to be Avy’s son.  James, Robert, and possibly John are likely somewhat older than the others.  This would suggest that they may be the fathers of some of the other younger individuals.

The Bandys of Central North Carolina

The earliest known reference to the name Bandy in North Carolina is the May 2, 1752 purchase by James Bandy of 195 acres in Edgecombe County on the north prong of Deep Creek.[1]   In Granville County, on December 3, 1754, James and 15 other men agreed to build a road from Fishing Creek Chapel to the north fork of  the Tar River and Eph'm and from there on to the Orange County line.[2]   On June 3, 1757, James purchased 120 acres in Granville County on the south side of Fishing Creek from Jacob Perry.  Robert Bandy was a witness to the purchase.[3]  On September 14, 1757, James was a witness to a real estate transaction between Peter Day and Lawrence Petiford.[4]  In 1761, James sold land in Granville County to Francis Huthens.  James is identified as living in Halifax County.[5]

James and Robert Bandy are listed on the muster roll of a company of foot soldiers in the regiment of Granville, Granville District, North Carolina Militia in 1754[6] and again in 1755.[7] At this time Edgecombe County was part of the Granville District.  Although there seems to be no record of Robert Bandy purchasing real estate in Granville County, transactions involving others in both 1758 and 1765 refer to property bordering on Robert's land.[8] There is little evidence of their wives of children.  There are at least two suggestions regarding James’ family.  Lewis Bandy has been listed as the son of James Bandy and Elizabeth Langston (born about 1754 - ? ). Elizabeth is listed as the daughter of Ann Woodard and Leonard Langston.[9] An alternative suggestion as to James’ family is that he is the father of Solomon Bandy and Rachel Bandy who married John Baker, Sr in 1779 in South Carolina.[10]  They lived in Abbeville, South Carolina, and both died in South Carolina. The basis for listing Rachel and Solomon as James’ children is unknown. The reference to Solomon is contrary to the common assumption that he is Richard’s son. The fact the assumed daughter, Rachel Baker, moved to South Carolina, is consistent with Jesse, discussed below, also being related.

The North Carolina Revolutionary War records for Halifax and Warrenton for 1781-1785 show Solomon Bandy in the Continental Army.[11]  Halifax and Warrenton were, at the time, adjacent to Granville District. This is consistent with his being James’ son.  However, Solomon according to family tradition is Richard’s son.

In 1765 and again in 1779, a John Bandy witnessed real estate transactions in Halifax County, North Carolina.[12]  Based on the name and dates, this could be the John of Augusta County, Virginia (see the discussion of  Virginia).  As noted in Chapters 1 and 2, John could be a descendent of Edward Banning.   He could, of course, be  related to Robert and James discussed above.  It is possible, however, that this is the John Bandy who moved to Georgia around 1788.  That John, like Lewis (discussed below), drew in the Georgia Revolutionary War veteran's land lottery.[13]   John had seven known children including a James Jr. who is thought to have died in 1812.  This James Jr. may be named after the James Bandy listed in the 1810 Edgecombe County, North Carolina census (see below) and/or the James in the North Carolina militia.  Other than one James possibly being the namesake of the other, their relationship is unknown. Other children include John, Jesse, William, Luke, Samuel, and Elizabeth.[14]  John is discussed in detail in Chapter 5.

It may be no more than a coincidence, but the 1762 will of John Daniel lists among other heirs, Martha Banbey and Elizabeth Dudley.[15]   It is noted that Edward Bannings son, Andrew Banning sometimes referred to as Andrew Bandy, married Debora Dudley and lived in Talbot County, Maryland at the same time of John Daniel’s death.

Given their real estate transactions, road construction involvement, and militia service during the 1750's, James  and  Robert were born no later than the 1730's.  If the John who witnessed North Carolina real estate transaction in the 1760's and 1770's is the same as the one who served in the Virginia militia in 1758, then he to would likely have been born the 1730's or perhaps the very early 1740's.  They do not seem to be Richard's sons unless there is another earlier individual with the name.   Robert and James were members of the militia during the same year that  Avy's (53, 14-39) two known sons, George (192, 16-373) ( 1750 - October 1822) and Thomas (75, 17-74) (1745 - ? ), were bound out as apprentices in Cumberland County, Virginia, and also the same year that Richard (71, 14-1) (July 8, 1722 - July 21, 1795) purchased land in Cumberland County.[16] Granville District is approximately 75 miles south of Cumberland County.

Although only a theory, it is assumed here that the first James,  Robert, and John are brothers and ancestors of subsequent Bandys in Edgecombe County.  Thus,  Lewis (136, 15-166)(1750 - after February, 1827) and James, discussed below, are assumed to be their sons.[17]  Solomon (71, 16-160) (discussed above and in Chapter 2) may be another son.  It is also assumed that James, Robert, or John could also be the ancestors of  David (16-931), Bryant, and John of  western North Carolina, and Jesse (15-487) of western North Carolina and South Carolina (all of whom are discussed below).   Another possible son is Tobias (discussed in Chapter 5). A few details include regarding these likely descendants include:

·                     In Leonard Langston's Edgecombe County, North Carolina will probated in 1780, Lewis Bandy (136, 15-166) was left Mr. Langston's "pine woods plantation, cattle, sheep, mare with crooked leg, chist that I had of James Brown, and Negro winch."  Lewis was to receive his inheritance when he "is of age."[18]    The will also mentions grandsons Isaac Langston, Luke Bolton, and granddaughter Elizabeth Bolton.  Lewis' relationship to Mr. Langston is not definitely known. His other heirs, except for his unnamed wife, seem to be grandchildren.  Nevertheless, Lewis is listed as marrying Elizabeth Langston (1754 - ? ) daughter of Leonard Langston (1720 - 1820) and Ann Woodard.[19]  Ann Langston’s August 2, 1788 will lists grandson Isaac Langston as her only heir.

If the John who moved to Georgia (discussed above and in Chapter 5) was old enough to witness a real estate transaction in 1765 and Lewis was a minor in 1780, they likely were of different generations (father and son, or uncle and nephew). It is, of course, possible that they were of the same generation (brothers or cousins).  Obviously, the John who moved to Georgia may not be the John who witnessed the real estate transactions. He could be a son or nephew of the older John.

Lewis Bandy is listed in the first U. S. Census taken in 1790 in Edgecombe County (p. 56).  The North Carolina Lewis is assumed the be the same Lewis who made his way to Georgia.  A Lewis Bandy was listed as a taxpayer in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1790 raising the question of whether there may have been two.[20]  Lewis Bandy is also listed as owing money to the estate of Axiom O'Neal on July 28, 1794 in Greene County, Georgia[21].  Although it is not clear when he sold the inherited land, the 1798 will of David Woodward indicates that he had purchased Edgecombe County, North Carolina land from Lewis Bandy.[22]  Lewis drew in the Georgia Revolutionary War solider's land lottery suggesting he was a veteran.[23]  He could have been a minor (probably meaning under age 21 in 1780) and still have been in the Revolutionary War which ended in 1783.

Lewis had nine children including a James (born in 1787) suggesting a possible tie to the James who was in the North Carolina militia and/or the James who married Susannah (see below).[24]  Lewis and Mary Barnes' other children include Elizabeth, Ephriam, William, Catherine, Thomas, Joseph, Absolom Barnes, and Mary.[25]  Lewis is discussed in detail in Chapter 5.

·                     John Bandy (Sr.) (148, 15-262) and Lavenia Woolf Bandy (148, 15-269) of Georgia had seven children.  They and their children are discussed in Chapter 5.  Davis states that circumstantial evidence suggests that John is from Halifax District, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.  A John Bandy witnessed two real estate transactions in Halifax, one in 1765 and a second in 1779.

·                     The John Bandy (discussed below) found in western North Carolina in the late 1700's and early 1800's could be yet another John descended from this early group.

·                     In the 1810 census, James Bandy was listed as being between the ages of 26 and 44 (Edgecombe County, North Carolina, p. 58).  Based on age, this James is not the same James who built a road, served in the militia, and purchased real estate during the 1750's.  James'  will was probated in 1812 in which he left his entire estate to his wife Susannah.[26] In each census for Edgecombe County from 1820 to 1840, Susanna Bandy is listed without an adult male residing in the household (pp. 127, 248, and 47 respectively).   In 1840, she is listed as being in her 70's.  In her will probated in 1842, Susannah left her estate in part to Sarah Knight (wife of James Knight),  in part to her nephew Matthew Exum (son of John Exum), and in part to niece Laura Baker (daughter of Wm. S. Baker).  She left her 10 slaves to Henry Hyman.[27]   His relationship is unknown.  The property left to Laura Baker is identified as having "descended to me from my sister Mary Durley." There seems to be no descendants of this group in Edgecombe County named Bandy in the next several decades suggesting either that there were no descendants named Bandy or that descendants moved away.

·                     The North Carolina Revolutionary War records for Halifax and Warrenton for 1781-1785 show Solomon Bandy in the Continental Army.[28]  Halifax and Warrenton were, at the time, adjacent to Granville District. As noted Solomon in traditionally viewed as Richard’s son, but at least one source lists Solomon as James’ son.

·                     David Bandy (16-931)(1760's - 1850's) discussed below, is thought to be a descended from the central North Carolina group based on the fact that he later reported his birthplace as North Carolina.

·                     Bryant Bandy (after 1770- after 1820) is assumed to be related based primarily on the fact that he lived in the same county as David and other members of the group during the early 1800's. Bryant is discussed below.

·                     Jesse Bandy (15-487) (ca. 1760 - 1830's) also is assumed to be related to other members of the group based primarily on the fact that he to lived in Burke County while other members of the group resided there in the early 1800's.  Jesse is discussed in Chapter 4.

The Bandys of Western North Carolina

The Bandys listed under this heading include John, David and Mourning, Bryant and Nelly, and George and Christina.  Several others listed above are assumed to be related.

John and Margaret

John Bandly is listed as a juror in a April 1793 Pleas Court case in Burke County, North Carolina.[29]  John Bandy married Margaret Hughs on January 7, 1815 in Haywood County, North Carolina.[30] The 1820 Lincoln County, North Carolina Census lists a John Bandy referred to here as John (Sr.) (p. 376).  It is not clear whether the references are to the same individual. The other four Bandys in the Lincoln County census are descendants of George (son of Avy).  On the same page as John (Sr.) is John Bandy, Jr., the son of George and grandson of Avy.  The  second John is not known to the family as a Jr. John (Sr.) may, however, have been an uncle or other relative after whom the younger John was named.  John (Sr.) is listed as being age 45 or over indicating that he was born in 1775 or earlier.  John (Sr.) lived with four females, one age 45 or over and three between the ages of 16 and 25.  Is this the John Bandly listed in the Burke County court record?  Is he the central North Carolina John Bandy?  One possibility is that he is the older John from central North Carolina and that he is the father of several Bandys found in western North Carolina.  It is noted that several other Bandys including George, Jesse, David and Bryant are found in Burke County during the late 1700's and early 1800's.

David and Mourning

David Bandy (16-931)(1760's-1850's), born in North Carolina, lived there most of his life.  Little has been reported of him previously.  David lived in  Burke, Rutherford, and Cherokee Counties in North Carolina and Monroe County, Tennessee.

David is listed in the census of 1800 living in Rutherford County, North Carolina with three girls between the ages of 10 and 16 (p. 98). David and his wife are listed as between the ages of 26-44. David, Jesse, and William are all listed on the 1804 Burke County tax roll indicating that David had moved to adjacent Burke County (see Chapter 4). It is noted, however, that the borders for the western North Carolina counties were redrawn several times during this era, and it is possible that David and other lived in an area where the borders were redrawn.

In 1810, David is listed in the  Burke County where he is shown with two boys under age 10, one girl under age 10, and two girls ages 10-15 (p. 340).  David and his wife are again listed as between the ages of 26-44.  The older girls in the 1810 census may not be his daughters as they were would have been listed in the census of 1800.   Also living in Burke County is Bryant Bandy who is listed as being in the same age bracket, 26 to 44 (see below).

David still lived in Burke County in 1820 with two boys under age 10,  one boy age 10-15, six females under age 26, and a woman between ages 26-44 (p. 43).   David is listed as being age 45 or over.

By the census of 1830, David had returned to Rutherford where he is listed with one male, age 10-14, two males in their 20's, five females under 30, and a woman in her 40's (p. 482).  David himself is listed as being in his 60's.

By 1840, David had made his way to Monroe County, Tennessee where he is listed with one male age 15-19, two females in their 20's, and a wife in her 50's (p. 159).  David is listed as being in his 70's.

David had moved to Cherokee County, North Carolina by 1850 where he is listed as age 87 (p. 69).  This is consistent with the ages shown in the earlier censuses except 1810 where he is listed as being between the ages of 26 and 44 when he would have been age 47.   It is possible that David's stated age of 87 is exaggerated, and that he was actually  in his early 80's.  David is listed along  with Mourning Bandy, age 60.  Her age in 1850 is  consistent with the ages of the oldest female listed in earlier censuses except 1800 and 1810 when she would have been too young to be the oldest woman listed.  She could either be David's second wife, or, alternatively, her age could be misstated.

The census records seem to suggest that David had perhaps as many as six daughters. Four likely daughters are listed below.  Because of the age difference between David and the younger females, it is possible that they are granddaughters.

·                     Mourning Bandey married Jesse Green in Haywood County, NC on December 26, 1837.  It is believed that this Mourning is David and the older Mourning's daughter.  Mourning, age 37, and Jesse Green, age 35, are listed in the 1850 Cherokee County, North Carolina census along with 5 children.  Based on the birthplaces listed for their children, Jesse and Mourning moved to Tennessee after their marriage and returned to North Carolina in the early 1840's.  It is noted that in addition to Mourning marrying Jesse Green in 1837, Mourning's likely brother, William, married Dicie Green in 1836 (see below).

??        William Green

??        John Green

??        Joseph Green

??        Balam Green (a male)

??        Sarah A. Green

·                     Another  possible daughter, Patsy Bandy, age 50, is listed living with Jesse and Mourning Green in 1850 (Cherokee County, North Carolina, p. 69).

·                     Living with David and Morning in 1850 is Ester Bandy, age 30.  In 1860, Ester is listed as living with her probable brother Jonathan Bandy in McMinn County, Tennessee (p. 338).In 1880, Ester is listed in Joseph Alexander Bandy’s Monroe County household.  Joseph is the son of Ruben E. Bandy, grandson of William Bandy, and great grandson of Jesse Bandy. This adds to the circumstantial evidence that Ester’s assumed father David and Jesse are brothers.

·                     Living with David and Morning in 1850 is Polly Bandy, age 25.  In 1860, Polly is listed as living with her probable brother Absolem Bandy in McMinn County, Tennessee (p. 284).

David,  both Mournings, Patsy, Ester, and Polly all list their birthplaces as North Carolina.  There is little other information as to who David's other daughters may be.

The census records seem to suggest that David had two sons born between 1800 and 1810 and two more born between 1810 and 1820.  There is circumstantial evidence as to who the four sons may have been.

·                     One possible son is William Bandy (559, 17-931) (1808-1860's) who married Dicie Green (559, 17-932) (1817-after 1870) in Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1836.  David does seem to have lived there at the time.  William and David are both listed in the Monroe County, Tennessee  census for 1840 (both at p. 159).  In the census for Bledsoe County, Tennessee in 1860, William and Dicie report their birthplaces as North Carolina as do some of their children (p. 70).  Other children, however, report Tennessee as their birthplace suggesting the family moved to Tennessee, back to North Carolina, and then back to Tennessee.  Dicie, but not William, is listed in the 1870 Hamilton County, Tennessee census, and the 1880 Trion County, Georgia census. Children born in North Carolina are:

??        Ancel L. (Landrum) Bandy  (1051, 18-1223) (September 23, 1838 - October 1, 1906) married Rhoda Jane Potter in December 1860 in Sequachie County, Tennessee. He apparently served in both the Union and Confederate Armies from Tennessee during the Civil War. He served in the 22nd Inf. Co. D for the Confederate Army and in the 3rd Cav Co. H and 7th Inf. of the Union Army.   He served 18 months in the Confederate Army apparently without pay. Two months after his term of service in the Confederate Army he joined the Union Army. He married Mary Ann Burgess  (1051, 18-1231) (September 2, 1844 - December 12, 1904) in Davidson County, Tennessee on April 7, 1864 and they had 12 children. Listed in the 1870 Kentucky census. There is some question as to whether Landrum is Ancel’s middle name, or is there a brother named Landrum.

???     Norman Bandy (1052, 19-1990) (1885 - ? )

As noted, Dicie's possible relative, Jesse, married Mourning Bandy in 1837.  William is thought to have died before 1870.  In 1870 in Hamilton County, Tennessee, Dicie is listed as age 53 (p. 651).  In the 1870 census for Pontotoc County, Mississippi, Dicy Horton is listed with Harvey Horton (p. 307).  Living with the couple are two children, Martha and Jeff, probably the children of Harvey and his first wife.  Also living in the household is Lee Bandy a 17 year old Black female who may be a former slave.  This Dicy lists her age as 36 and her birthplace as South Carolina.  It is not definite how these two Dicies fit together, but the younger Dicie could be an older daughter of  William and Dicie.

·                     A second possible son is Greenbury Bandy (17-1634)(1808-after 1870) who is listed in Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1840 after David and William had moved to Tennessee (p. 322).  In 1850, a Greenbury Bandy is listed in White County, Tennessee married to Sarah (age 38) (White County, Tennessee, p. 87) with six children.  The birthplace listed for  Sarah and all six children is North Carolina.  In 1850, Greenbury's birthplace is listed as South Carolina, but in the census of 1870, Greenbury lists his birthplace as North Carolina (White County, Tennessee, p. 403).  Their children, listed below are based on the two censuses and on information provided by descendant Claire Bandy.  The information was compiled by Howard L. Baine, Jr. If the information relating to the William (discussed in the previous paragraph) and Greenbury is correct they could be twins.  It is noted that William and Greenbury moved from Rutherford County, North Carolina to adjacent Tennessee counties.   As noted, Greenbury alternatively reported his birthplace as North Carolina and South Carolina, suggesting that the family spent time in both states.  That is another indication of a tie between the western North Carolina group and the South Carolina group. Descendant Howard Baine reports that Greenbury was born in Camden, Chester County, South Carolina, and that he is the son of William and Ann Deaderick Bandy. Howard also reports Sarah’s maiden name as Nelson. His account lists William’s birth date as 1774.  The above listed William was born after 1800. If he is the son of a William Bandy, then it likely is the William Bandy who listed in the 1800 Chester County, South Carolina census. See chapter 4.

??        Thomas Edgar Bandy (December 11, 1834 - November 10, 1895) married Margaret Olive Milligan (Millican) (September 10,  1840 - May 19, 1915 ) on August 8, 1858 in White County.[32]  Margaret Milligan, widow of Thomas E. Bandy and who was born in North Carolina and died in Cumberland County, Tennessee, applied for Confederate Widow’s benefits.  She married Thomas in White County, Tennessee.[33]  Based on the 1870 White County, Tennessee census (p. 401) and information provided by Claire Bandy their 17 children include:

·                     A third possible son is Absolem Bandy (598, 17-1075) (around 1798-1891) who married Sarah Walker (598, 17-1076) (around 1803-1893) in Rutherford County, North Carolina sometime in the early 1830's.  By 1850, Absolem and Sarah had moved to McMinn County, Tennessee (p. 273).  As their children, ages 4 through 15, all listed North Carolina as their birthplaces the move must have been after 1846 and somewhat independent of the moves by the others.   Absolem, Sarah, and their children  remained in McMinn through 1860 where they are listed in the census (p. 284).  A 12 year Cyntha is listed in the household in 1860 along with  40 year old Polly, probably the same Polly who lived with David in 1850.  By 1870, Absolem H. and Sarah were listed in the Phelps County, Missouri census (p. 638).  Sons Francis and Martin are listed on the same page of the census. Both Martin and Francis have one year old children listed as having been born in Tennessee which indicates that the families moved to Missouri in about 1869. Absolem and Sarah were buried in Luckey Chapel Cemetery in Phelps County.  The cemetery derives its name from the Luckey Chapel founded by Rev. John H. Luckey.[36]  The children are:

??        Martin Bandy  18-1507) (born 1835) In the 1870 Phelps County, Missouri census (p. 638) Martin is listed with wife Lithe (born in 1831) and two sons:

???     Francis Bandy (1866- ?).

???     John Bandy (1869 - ? ).

??        Narcissa Bandy  (598, 18-1508) (1838 - ? ).

??        Francis M.  Bandy (598, 18-1509) (1843-  ? ) In the 1870 Phelps County, Missouri census (p. 638), Francis is listed with wife Catherine (born in 1849) and daughter:

???     Ellen Bandy (1869 - ? ).

??        Cynthia Minerva Bandy  (598, 18-1510) (1846 - ?).

·                     Also living in Cherokee County, North Carolina in 1850 and listed on the same page of the census record as David is Jonathan Bandy (599, 17-1077) (1823 - after 1860),  wife Ruth (599, 17-1078) (1824-after 1860), and three children all of whom list North Carolina as their birthplace (p. 69).  They are listed in McMinn County, Tennessee in 1860 where the birthplace for the children is listed as Tennessee  (p. 338).   No sons under age 10 were listed in David's household in 1830. This suggests an error in the record, that Jonathan lived elsewhere, or that Jonathan is not David's son. The male between the ages of 15 and 20 listed in David's household in the 1840 census could, however, be Jonathan. It is noted that Ester who lived with David in Cherokee County, NC in 1850 lived with Jonathan in McMinn County, Tennessee in 1860.  These fact suggest a family relationship.  The children are:

??        Thomas J. Bandy  (599, 18-1511) (1843 - ?). Probably the Thomas J. Bandy who married Elizabeth Yarnell in McMinn County, Tennessee on October 1, 1864.

??        Amanda A. Bandy  (599, 18-1512)(1848 - ?).

??        Charity Jane Bandy  (599, 18-1513)(1850 - ? ).

??        Dugger F. Bandy (599, 18-1514) (1857 - ? ) a boy.

Bryant and Nelly

Bryant Bandy  (1770's-1840's) is first mentioned in the 1809 Chester County, South Carolina will of John Wright (the name is spelled Bryan). Apparently, John Wright left land to his widow Susannah, and gave his son James the opportunity to rent the land from Susannah. Bryant was to have the right to rent the land if  James  chose not to rent the property, and the property was to be sold if neither wanted it. Bryant apparently did not rent the land as he is found in the North Carolina census for Burke County in 1810 (p. 122).  Is Bryant related to John Wright?  Individuals who are named in wills are often related to the deceased. In his will, John bequests to his two daughters “Elizabeth and Jemima” his “two negroe girls.”  Possibly Bryant was married to one of John’s daughters.

This Bryant should not be confused with the Bryant, son of William, born in Tennessee in 1820.  As noted, William and Jesse Bandy (William's father) had also spent time in both Chester County, South Carolina and Burke County, North Carolina.   Bryant lived in Burke County at the same time as David Bandy (1760's-1850's).   Burke County  is adjacent to Lincoln County where George Bandy (1750-1822), son of Avy, lived (p. 384).  Bryant, David, Jesse and their sons moved to adjoining Tennessee counties in the early to middle 1800's.

In Burke County, North Carolina in 1810, Bryant Bandy is listed as being  between the ages of 26 to 44.  Bryant  is listed with two boys and one girl under age 10 and a woman between the ages of 16 and 25.   Bryant cannot be found in the census of 1820.  He had perhaps moved to east Tennessee as the 1820 census for that area is missing.

Bryant Bandy married Nelly Hix in Blount County, Tennessee on  February 23, 1826[37], and they had moved to Knox County, Tennessee by 1830.  In the 1830 Knox County  census, Bryant is listed as being in his 50's and his wife (Nelly) is listed as in her 30's (p. 347).  The fate of Bryant's first wife is unknown.  Also living with Bryant and Nelly are four children, a girl under 5, and three boys, one each between the ages of 5-9, 10-14, and 15-19.  Although the daughter may be Bryant and Nelly's, it is fairly likely that the sons are Bryant and his first wife's, but alternatively could be Nelly and her first husband's. The oldest son in the 1830 census may be William, listed below.  Also living in Knox County in separate households at that time are Peter, Thomas (17-1632), and their families.  Based on their ages, they too are thought to be the sons of Bryant and his first wife.

Available information suggests Bryant could have had as many as six sons, two listed in his household in 1810 (Thomas and an unknown son), one listed living in the same county in 1830 (Peter), and three living with him in 1830 (perhaps William and two unknown sons).  As noted, however, the three younger sons could be Nelly's from her first marriage.  There is little evidence of their fate.  Information for the other three is presented below:

·                     In the 1830 Knox County, Tennessee census, Thomas Bandy, a neighbor of Bryant, is in his 20's living with a woman in her 30's (p. 347).   Thomas Bandy married Elizabeth Yarnell in Knox County on August 17, 1829,[38] and she is likely the woman listed in Thomas's household in  the census of 1830.

A Thomas is listed in the census of 1840 in Hendrick County, Indiana is thought to be the Thomas who lived Knox County, Tennessee in 1830 (p. 4).  Also listed in Hendrick County, Indiana  in 1840 are Keren, a female in her 50's, and William, a male in his 60's (pp. 112 and 74 respectively).   Their identities are unclear.   Keren and William are both old enough to be Thomas' parents as Thomas is listed as being in his 30's, but they could also be aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

In the 1850 Morgan County, Indiana census, Thomas' age is 44 and his birthplace in North Carolina tying the family to North Carolina in 1806 (p.  165).  Thomas is listed with Elizabeth (aged 49) whose birthplace is also listed as in North Carolina.   The children’s birthplaces indicate that Thomas and Elizabeth moved to Indiana sometime between 1832 and 1839.  This early move is consistent with  the Thomas listed in adjacent Hendricks County, Indiana in 1840 being the same Thomas. In 1850, they are listed with  two children:

??        Joel Bandy (age 18, born in Tennessee)

??        Sasanah Bandy, probably Susanah, (age 11, born in Indiana).

·                     In the 1830 Knox County, Tennessee census,  Peter Bandy is listed as being between the ages of 15 and 19 with 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls) under age 5, a female between the ages of 15 and 19, and another female in her 20's (p. 378).   How many of the children, if any, are his is unknown.  No other record of Peter, the women, nor the children can be found.

·                     The William Bandy (17-1642) who married Mary Ann Brown in Knox County on February 20, 1841 could be one of the sons listed in Bryant's household in  1830.[39]  A William (age 36) and Mary Ann Bandy (age 26) are listed in the Smith County, Tennessee Census for 1850 with four children.  If  Mary Ann's age is listed correctly, she is unlikely to be Nancy's mother.  No record can be found of a previous marriage by William, nor is there a definite record of William in the 1840 census.

·

Another William in his 60's is listed in Hendricks County, Indiana along with Thomas in 1840 (pp. 74 and 4 respectively). The relationship, if any, between the two Williams is unknown.

The 1850 listing for William and Mary Ann in Smith County does raise an interesting question as to a link between William and Bryant and the Bandys who lived in  Smith County at the time of the 1840 census.  Although the others had all left by 1850, the group consisted of descendants of 1795 Richard's son Thomas or possibly Avy's Thomas.

Based on the 1850 Smith County,  Tennessee census (p. 331) the children are:

??        Nancy Bandy (age 14)

??        Liga Bandy (a male, age 9)

??        Sarah Bandy (age 3)

??        James Bandy (age 4 months)

Bryant, spelled Briant, is found in the Anderson County, Tennessee census in 1840 (p. 28). His age is listed as in the 40's which is younger than the previous census, suggesting either a different Bryant or an error in recording the age. If his age were close to 40, he could have been the other son in the older Bryant's 1810 household.  Bryant cannot be found after 1840.

George and Christina

George Bandy (192, 16-373) (1750 - Jun 1830) son of Avy (75, 14-38), is the best known Bandy of  North Carolina.  George (·) and wife Christiana Slinkard (192, 16-374) (? - June 1830) had 12 children.[40]  Their children (??), grandchildren (???), and great-grandchildren (????) are listed below. Great-great-grandchildren (?????) are included if the family name if Bandy.

·           George Bandy was born in Virginia and reported to have moved to North Carolina during the American Revolution. Much is written about him by his descendent Allen Bandy, Sr.[41]   Although Allen Bandy lists George as descended from 1795 Richard in The History of the Bandy Family, he reports, in correspondence with this writer, that he now concludes that George is Avy’s son.  This is based on an analysis of records that show that there were two Georges, one who was born in Virginia and moved to Kentucky and a second who was born in Virginia and moved to North Carolina. Based on real estate transaction, tax records and other information, Burt and Jane Eubank in Bandy Gallimaufry do an excellent job of supporting a conclusion that the George who moved to North Carolina is Avy’s son.  George is listed as indebted to the state in Burke County, North Carolina in 1889 suggesting that he first moved there.[42] He is listed in Lincoln County in 1790, 1800, and 1810. Part of  Lincoln County became Catawba County. George’s presence in Burke County does suggest a relationship between he and other Bandys who are found there including John, David, and Jesse.
