Chapter 4  Jesse and Charity of the Carolinas and Tennessee

 

Jesse Bandy (15-487) (1760-after 1830), wife Charity Bandy, and their family made their way from South Carolina and North Carolina to Tennessee. Jesse was born about 1760, and his birthplace most likely was North Carolina.  As discussed in the previous chapter, Jesse is assumed to be descended from the central North Carolina group that included James, Robert, John, and others. As noted, that group is assumed to be descended from the Talbot County, Maryland Bandy/Bannings or perhaps from the Bandys of Accomack County, Virginia.  Jesse is also believed to be this writer’s ancestor.

 

In the first United States census in 1790, Jesse Bandy was the only Bandy head-of-household in South Carolina (Chester County, p. 16),  and one of only three in the surviving census record for the entire country.[1]  Living with Jesse were two males, one under 16 and one over 16, and two females, ages not listed.  In 1800, Jesse still lived in Chester County with three males under age 10, one male age 26 to 44 (probably Jesse himself), two females under age 10, three females between 10 and 15, one female between 26 and 44, and one female over age 44 (p. 73).  William, discussed below, was also listed in Chester County. 

 

On January 28, 1801 Jesse and Charity Bandy his wife sold 100 acres of  to Stephen Blissit for $240.[2] The date is listed as the twain eight day of January one thousand eight hundred and one and in the 25 of America’s Independence. This is the only known reference to Charity. The land is described as a plantation and lying on the water of Rocky Creek in Chester District, South Carolina.  Title to the land originated with his Excellency William Bull, Esquire on September 16^th, 1774 and was transferred by Thomas Faid to Wm Cloud, and by Wm. Cloud to Jesse Bandy. 

 

In 1804, Jesse, William, and David (see Chapter 3) are listed in the Burke County, North Carolina tax list.[3]  The record indicates that Jesse is listed in Capt. Dysarts Co., with 450 acres, and one poll. William is listed with no land and one poll, and David is listed with 70 acres and one poll.  It is not clear what the reference to poll means, but could refer to eligible voters. Bryant, John and George (also discussed in Chapter 3) also spent time in Burke County. As noted in Chapter 3, Bryant Bandy also was in Chester County, South Carolina.

 

The fact that David, Jesse, Bryant, John and George are listed in the same county at the same time and are approximately the same ages suggests that they are related.

 

Jesse disappears until 1827 when he is identified as purchasing property from the Rhea County, Tennessee estate of Martin Howard.[4]   In the census of 1830, Jesse Bandy lived  in Rhea County (pp.  379 respectively).  Jesse was listed in the 60-70 age bracket, which would have been the right age if he were close to 70.   In Jesse's 1830 household are one male between 5 and 10, two between 10 and 15, and one in his 60's (Jesse).  The females included one between 5 and 10, one between 10 and 15, one in her 20's, two in their 30's, and one in her 50's.  Given Jesse’s age he very well could be living with a daughter or a daughter-in-law.  The younger children would likely be Jesse’s grandchildren.  Alternatively, the woman could be Jesse’s second wife.

 

Although it is reasonable to assume that Jesse died prior to the 1840 census, it is unclear what happened to the other members of his 1830 household.  Of course, it is not known what their names were, so they may simply be listed under other last names.  Possibly, however, some of the members are in Cela Bandy's 1840 Lincoln County census.  Alternatively, her household could be the remnants of George Bandy's household  (discussed below).  In 1840, Cela is listed with 4 males (one between the ages of 10 and 15 and 3 between 15 and 20) and  3 females (one each in her 20's, 30's, and 40's).  The ages do match those of Jesse’s household fairly well, although Cela would not have been the oldest female in Jesse’s 1830 household. It is unlikely that Cela is the same person as Charity as the age seems incorrect.

 

The eight children (·) are attributed to Jesse and Charity.  As no wills, Bible records, or other direct evidence of relationships has been found, many of the relationships listed below are judged  speculative, and should be considered with care.  Nevertheless, in absence of other documented sources, this listing is an effort to relate the many individuals found in the same geographic areas during the late 1700's and early and middle 1800's.

 

·                     William Bandy (175, 16-216) (1780 - 1860's) was born in South Carolina and is found in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, and Arkansas. He married a Juditha and a Sarah.

 

·                     John Bandy (17-1638) (1790 - after 1860) was born in South Carolina, and is listed in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1830, In 1840, John likely is in Wayne County, Tennessee, and in Perry County, Tennessee in 1850. In 1850, he is assumed to be  married to Harriet, age 39, probably his second wife. Harriet, however, could be his daughter or daughter-in-law.

 

·                     Dempsey Bandy (1790's - before 1840) is found in Rhea County, Tennessee during the late 1820's and early 1830's. His assumed widow Elizabeth (17-1657) is found in Lincoln County, in 1840. She and their assumed children are in Arkansas in 1850 and in Texas in 1860, 1870, and 1880.

 

·                     David (17-1744) (1790's - before 1850) married Margaret Casteel (about 1802 - ? ) on August  6, 1828 in Rhea County, Tennessee,. In the 1830 Rhea County census,  David is listed as being in his 30's,  with one male under age 5, and one between 5 and 10.  David is  listed in both Rhea and Polk Counties in the 1840 census. The 1850 Madison County, Missouri household of 20 year old Thomas and  40 year old Margrette Parker includes six children named Bandy along with 7 month old David J. Parker.  It is assumed that Margaret Bandy  married Thomas Parker after David’s death.

 

·                     Jesse Bandy (Jr.) (17-1636) (1801 - ? ) married Artimissa Underwood in Roane County, Tennessee in 1822.[5]   Roane County is adjacent to Rhea County where Jesse lived. The name and the fact that Jesse later reported both North Carolina and Tennessee as his birthplace suggests a relationship but does not establish that he is the son of the older Jesse. Vera Casteel reports that Jesse Bandy married Sarah Casteel (about 1813 - ? ) in 1835 in Rhea County, Tennessee. That may have been a second marriage.

 

·                     Charlotte Bandy who married Archibald Harris in Roane County, Tennessee on October 14, 1820.[6]  Charlotte and Archibald cannot be found elsewhere. The date of the marriage would suggest that Charlotte is too old to be the daughter of others Bandys who lived in the area at that time.

 

·                     Cynthia Bandy (February 27, 1806 - April 20, 1867) who married John Underwood, Jr., (June 25, 1800 - October 19, 1870)  in Roane County, Tennessee on December 17, 1822.[7]  Roane County is adjacent to Rhea County where Jesse lived. The Underwood family moved to Dade County, Missouri around 1847. W. L. Robertson of Nocono, Texas identified Cynthia as Jesse daughter.  The basis for the attribution is unknown.

 

·                     Nancy Jane Bandy (1809 - about January 16, 1898) married Joseph Marion Casteel, Sr.  (1804 - between 1885 and 1890) in July, 1828 in Rhea County,[8]  LDS CD-ROM lists Nancy Jane Bandy as being born in 1809 and as the daughter of Jesse.  The basis for that attribution is unknown.

 

Each assumed child (·) is listed again along with grandchildren (??), great grandchildren (???), great-great grandchildren (????), and great-great-great grandchildren (?????):

 

·                     Living in Chester County, South Carolina in 1800 is William Bandy (175, 16-216) (1780 - 1860's) who later reported[9] that he was born in South Carolina around 1780 indicating that he probably is Jesse's son.  William would have been the male under age 16 in Jesse’s 1790 census listing.

 

In the 1800 census, William Bandy reports his age as between 16-25 and his wife reports her age in the same age bracket (Chester County, South Carolina, p. 88).  As noted, William was listed on the 1804 Burke County, North Carolina tax list.   On December 22, 1806, a William Bandy purchased 100 acres of land in Spartanburg, South Carolina on the south side of Buck Creek from Thomas Pope for $100, and he sold the same land on January 21, 1808 to David Adcock for the same price.[10]  William and Jesse cannot be found in the censuses of 1810 and 1820.  Sometime after the South Carolina land sale, but before 1815, William and Jesse are assumed to have moved to Tennessee.  This is based on the fact that possible sons Jesse and Jonathan born during this time period list their birthplaces as North Carolina, while others born after 1815 list Tennessee as their birthplaces.  William is listed in the 1830 Rhea County, Tennessee census (although his age is apparently misstated as he is listed as being in his 30's) and the 1840 Bradley County, Tennessee census where he is listed as being in his 50's. In January 1840, William purchased a farm in Ocoee District Tennessee (now Bradley County) for $1.[11]  Meigs was actually part of Rhea County in 1830. The two counties were separated by 1840.

 

In about 1847, William and wife Juditha (175, 16-284) (1782 - 1850's) moved to Lawrence County, Missouri, and William moved to Arkansas before the census of 1860. Son Hugh purchased 180 acres of land on the White River in Carroll County, Arkansas in 1854.  It is  possible that William and Hugh moved to Arkansas at the same time.

 

Apparently, William married again sometime in the 1850's to a Sarah (176, 16-613) (1786 - after 1860) who was born in North Carolina around 1786.[12]  

 

William and Juditha's four sons include James Alexander Bandy (March 20, 1813 - ? ) Reuben Elmer (September 24, 1815 - 1891), Hugh (August 10, 1818 - 1872), and Bryant (August 16, 1820 - perhaps after 1880).  The names of the sons is from the Burnett family Bible in the possession of Robert Burnett of Ramona, Oklahoma. The number of sons is confirmed in a newspaper story that identifies Hugh as the third of four sons born to William and Judith Bandy.[13]  The 1830 Rhea County, Tennessee census also includes four sons, the correct ages. That listing also suggests that William and Juditha had at least three daughters.  Their identities are unknown. Reuben, Hugh, and Bryant all report their birthplaces as Tennessee in census records. The Burnett family Bible entry states, “William and Juditha Bandy, father and mother to those boys.”  The entry is signed by Mary A. Burnett. She is the daughter of Hugh and Susan Foster Bandy (see below).

 

??        James Alexander Bandy (March 20, 1813 - ? ).  Information recently acquired  from Charlie Walker and Wes Evans indicates that James A. Bandy married Martha A. Adams (March 1, 1823 - May 29, 1907) in December 1845 in Monroe County, Mississippi.  Martha is listed in the 1870 Monroe County census with five children.  Emily Bandy, age 15, is  listed as living alone in the 1870 Monroe County, Mississippi census. She could also be a daughter.

 

???     Sarah L. Bandy (February 28, 1848 - ? ) was born in Smithville, Monroe County, Mississippi.

 

???     Samuel A. Bandy (February 29, 1848 - June 13, 1915) was born in Smithville, Monroe County, Mississippi, and died in Monroe, LaFlore County, Oklahoma. He married Dellila Black (March 7, 1849 - ? ) in Mississippi in 1870, and they had 12 children. The first 11 were born in Mississippi and the youngest was born in the Indian Territory.

????   Alice Myrtle Bandy (July 1892 - February 22, 1918) married John Thomas Williams (May 8, 1873 - October 9, 1944) on June 12, 1912, and they had one son. She was born in Monroe, Indian Territory and died in Monroe, LeFlore County, Oklahoma.

 

????   Oscar Bandy (March 20, 1896 - January 28, 1904). He was born and died in Monroe, Indian Territory, and died in Monroe, LeFlore County, Oklahoma.

??        Reuben Elmer Bandy (442, 17-594) (September 24, 1815 - 1891) was born in Tennessee suggesting that the family had moved to Tennessee by 1815.  William was listed in the Rhea County census for 1830 along with Jesse and others.  The age for William is incorrect, but the listing is assumed to be for him.  By the census of 1840, William and son Hugh are listed in Bradley County while Reuben E. and Bright (Bryant) are in Meigs County. Reuben is also listed there in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses.   In 1840, Bryant served as bondsman in the wedding of Reuben E., to Mary Jane Williams (442, 17-753) ( 1820 - 1891) in Meigs County.[14]  By January 1841, Bryant has moved to Bradley County as he purchased 40 acres of land there that month.[15]  Reuben died in Collin, Texas in 1891. Based on the listed birthplace for some of their children, Reuben and Mary lived in Illinois for a while. Reuben and Mary’s children include:

???     John William Bandy (442, 18-1149) (1845 - ? ). The John W. Bandy  who married Sarah (Lavada ) Foar in Meigs County, Tennessee on June 29, 1865 is thought to be this John. There are four John Bandys who served in the Confederate Army and two in the Union from Tennessee.  It is not clear whether this John is one of the veterans. Also, the John W. listed in the 1880 Carroll County, Arkansas census married to Sarah (1848 - ? ) with six children is thought to be this John:

??        Bryant Bandy (420, 17-650) (August 16, 1820 - perhaps after 1880) married Phebe A. Gassaway (420, 17-863) (1820 - before 1870) who was born in South Carolina. The marriage likely was prior to 1840.  Bryant married Margaret Langford (421, 17-1207)( March 17, 1847 - March 19, 1923) who was born in Arkansas. By some accounts the marriage was took place in 1868 in Arkansas.  By other accounts, the marriage between Bryant and Margaret took place in Illinois.  He is listed in the 1840 Tennessee census, the 1850 Missouri census, and the 1860 and 1870 Arkansas censuses.

 

He is believed to have moved to Texas sometime after his brother Hugh’s murder in 1872 and before 1880.  He is not found in the 1880 census even though Margaret is listed in Texas. By some accounts he was dead, but by others they had a son born in 1882. Margaret married E. L. Allgood (February 15, 1853 - December 17, 1895) on March 8, 1882 in Denton County, Texas. They had four children of their own. Two are thought to be Dolly Allgood born in 1887 and Charles Allgood born in 1892. Both were born in the Indian Territory. Some of Bryant and Margaret’s children may have taken the Allgood name. Margaret likely married Tilford Denney on June 11, 1902 in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. The marriage is listed as between T.D. Denny and Mrs. Mary Ann Rains, age 51. Was the marriage between Tilford and Margaret or between Tilford and Margaret’s step-daughter Mary Ann? The last name Rains suggests that Tilford’s wife was previously married to a Rains.  Chickasaw Nation records list Tilford Denney’s second wife as Margaret A. Lankford born March 17, 1848 in Arkansas. In 1910, she is listed as Margaret A. Allgood, age 62, in the Pontotoc County, Oklahoma census living alone.

???     William H. Bandy (1025, 18-1162) (1847 - ? ) married Catherine L. Standlee (1025, 18-1928) (May 12, 1844 - March 18, 1931) in 1868, and they had two known children. It is not clear whether he died young or left his family. Catherine applied for benefits as the widow of a Confederate soldier in 1928 and was awarded $50 per month.[16] The application states that William served from the summer of 1864 to the end of the war. He survived the war, and according to Catherine died “sometime after the close of the war.” She reported that he served in Hunters Regiment of Company C. There is little other evidence regarding his fate. A William Bandy did marry Sarah Francis Delk in 1874, but his identity is unknown. See  Chapter 11. William and Catherine’s children include:

Their marriage is recorded in the Records of Carroll County Arkansas Book A (1883-1893) p. 304. They had seven children, and eventually divorced.  After they divorced "Ola" moved back to Kansas and married a Patterson.  "Ike" lived his entire life in Arkansas and was buried next to his mother. Ike and Ola’s children include:

????? Claud Bandy (April 4, 1898 - December 1975) married Nellie (Ethel) Moody (1902 - 1989) on December 20, 1919 in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas. They moved to California, but returned to Arkansas. They had eight  children including Irene Helen Bandy Thompson (1920 -    ) Nina Ethel Bandy Strickland (1921 -     ), Linzy Lin Bandy (October 31, 1925 - April 5, 1990), Dorothy Louise Bandy Hart (1928  -     ), Arvle L. Bandy (1930 - 1990), Gayle Marie Bandy Coccavale (1932 -    ), Carroll L. Bandy (1936 -    ), and Maxie D. Bandy (1938  - 1993). By one account Claud and Nell’s home was blown away by a tornado in Berryville in 1942. Claud was a carpenter. Linzy owned a jewelry store in California and was wounded by gunshot  during a holdup.

 

????? Ruby E. Bandy (December 23, 1901- November 1982) married Benton Wood on January 9, 1920 in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas, and they lived in Norwalk, California. Their children include Donald, Jack, Inez Wood McCloud and another son who was killed in World War II when his airplane was shot down over Germany.

 

????? Abalene G. Bandy (1905 - ? ) married Raymond Gentry and they had three girls and a boy. The son, Rex Gentry, lives in Berryville, Arkansas. He has four adopted children.

 

????? Blanche O. Bandy (June 27, 1908 - April 27, 1993) married Edward R. Davies (1905 - ? ) on August 4, 1929 in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas.   She died in Texas. Her daughter is Shirley Davies Atkins (December 18, 1935 - ).  Shirley’s daughter is Rose Atkins Morris (about 1964 -    ) who married Martin Morris.

 

????? Ivan J. Bandy (September 12, 1913 - July 1968) moved to Kansas with his mother after his parents divorced. He married and had two daughters Sandra and Sandy (perhaps there is confusion over the names). He served in World War II and survived the Death March, but came home with malaria. He divorced and moved to Pharr, Texas. He lived his niece Shirley Davies Atkins until one day he was “hunting Japs” and shot her bedroom walls full of holes. He was placed in a VA Hospital and later released.  He died in a hotel room, and was buried in Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

 

????? Helen T. Bandy (1917 - ?) moved to Kansas with her mother after her parents divorced. She lived in Clay Center, Kansas. She married twice. She had two children with her first husband, name unknown, Their first names were Duane and Joyce. Duane is deceased. Her second husband was Chet Kent.[17]

L. “Otto” and the birth in 1880.  It was Alloma’s third marriage. Her first husband was named Fuller and second was named Fretwell. She had one daughter Effie May Fuller (November 13, 1900 - ? ) with her first husband. She had one son, Earl V. Fretwell (January 1, 1896 - ? ) with her second husband. Based on the birth dates of the two children, it is likely that the order of the first and second husbands is reversed. Walter and Alloma  had eight children.[18]

 

????   Sidney Overton Bandy (January 22, 1905 - April 9, 1968) was born in Oakman, Pontotoc County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. He lived and died in Texas.

·                     A second possible son of Jesse and Charity is John Bandy (17-1638) (1790 - after 1860) who is listed in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1830 (p. 208).  He is listed as being in his 40's. Four younger persons, two males (one between 5 and 10 and one between 10 and 15) and two females (one between 10 and 15 and one in her 20's) are in his household.  The older female could be  John's wife, but she is not likely the mother of the younger members of the household.  By 1840, John is no longer listed there, but three other Bandy households discussed above are:  Cela, Elizabeth, and Jesse (pp. 26, 36, and 48 respectively). 

 

By 1840, John likely is in Wayne County where he is listed with two males under age 5, one between 5 and 10, one between 15 and 20, and one in his 50's (John himself).  The females include one between 5 and 10 and a second in her 30's (Harriet).

 

A John Bandy reported in the Perry County, Tennessee census of 1850 that he was born in South Carolina and that he was 60 years old (p. 284).  

 

In 1850, John's reported South Carolina birthplace suggesting that he is related to Jesse and William as they are the only known Bandys in South Carolina at the time of John’s birth.  The similarity between the names of his children and the children of William and Jesse also suggests a relationship. 

 

Another explanation is that John is the son of the John and Lavenia Bandy who moved from North Carolina to Georgia (see the next chapter).  Members of that family did spend time in South Carolina. That John disappeared from available records in the 1820's.  Possibly, John left Georgia and moved to Tennessee.  In that case, Harriet would be his second wife.  The fact that she is some 20 year's younger than her husband is consistent with John having been married earlier in his life. It is possible that all of this group is descended from the central North Carolina group (Robert, James, and John). Thus, some descendants moved to Georgia (John and Lewis) while others moved to western North Carolina/South Carolina (Jesse, David, Bryant, and possibly others). The possibility that they again came together in Tennessee is intriguing. There is no specific facts, however, that supports this theory.

 

His listed in John’s 1850 household is his assumed wife, Harriet.  Her birthplace is listed as Tennessee and her age as 39.  The age difference suggests she could be John’s second wife. However, she could be his daughter or daughter in law. John’s children include:

 

??        Thomas Bandy (18-2642) listed as age 18 in the 1850 census. Thomas is assumed to be the 30 year old Thomas Bandy listed in Mendocio County, California in 1860 (p.871).

 

??        Robert David Bandy (April 3, 1832 - ? ) was also listed as age 18 in the 1850 census.   Robert, age 34, is listed with 24 year old Ann in New Madrid County, Missouri in 1870 with 5 children.  In 1850, Robert and Ann are listed with Tennessee birthplaces while the children are all listed with Missouri birthplaces (p. 281).   Mary Ann Craig Franklin reports that Robert David Bandy (April 3, 1832 - ? ) married Nancy Ann Strother (November 18, 1845 - ? ) on April 21, 1859, and that they reared 13 children.[19]  The children include:

??        Sanford Bandy (18-2644) was listed as age 15 in the 1850 census.  Sanford A., age 22, is listed with Martha O., age 22, in Wayne County, Tennessee in 1860 (p. 296).  Sanford married Martha A. Craig in Wayne County on November 17, 1859, and he married Sophia Mullen, in Wayne County, on August 25, 1868.  Sanford (listed by the initial S.) and Sophia are listed in the 1870 Gibson County, Tennessee census with four children (p. 508):

 

???     Jinnia Bandy who is listed as age 9 in 1870. Based on her age Jinnia is assumed to be Martha's daughter.

·                     A third likely son of Jesse and Charity is Dempsey Bandy.  Dempsey is listed on the Rhea County tax rolls in both 1828 and 1829 (Capt. Howars Co.),[20] Dempsey is listed in the Rhea County tax list in 1833 along with William and Jonathan Bandy[21] and again in the 1834 list (Capt. Colliers Co.).[22]  In the 1830 Rhea County, Tennessee census, Dempsey is listed as being in his 30's, living with one male under 5 and one between 5 and 10 along with two females under age 5, one between 5 and 10, two between 10 and 15, one in her 30's (probably his wife Elizabeth) and another woman in her 50's.  On May 7, 1832,  Dempsey  along with assumed brother David Bandy inventoried the estate of David Casteel.[23]    David Casteel (1806 - 1832) is the brother of Margaret, Joseph, and Sarah Casteel who married Dempsey’s siblings. Dempsey was appointed overseer in a road construction project in May 1832 and replaced in May 1833.[24]  In May 1839, the estate of John Woods paid a bill owed to Dempsey Bandy.[25]  The information is somewhat ambiguous, and may be a reference to some other financial relationship between Woods and Dempsey. Records relating to Dempsey are limited to this narrow time period. 

 

Efforts to locate Dempsey at earlier and later dates have been unsuccessful.[26]  For example Dempsey cannot be found in other censuses.  Based on a close match between the ages of the children reported in Dempsey's 1830 Rhea County household and those reported in Elizabeth Bandy's 1840 Lincoln County census,  Elizabeth is assumed to be his widow.  In her 1840  household are four males (one under age 5, one between 5 and 10, and two between 10 and 15) and six females (one under age 5, one between 5 and 10, one between 10 and 15, one between 15 and 20, one in her 40's (Elizabeth), and one in her 70's (the same older female listed in Dempsey's 1830 household?)  Three marriages in Lincoln County maybe Dempsey and Elizabeth's older children.  They include Elizabeth Bandy's September 17, 1842 marriage to William Faulkner and Sarah Bandy's February 1, 1848 marriage to James Rutledge.[27]

 

In  Elizabeth's 1850 Clark County, Arkansas household are five children Calvin, Jesse, Mary, James F., and Elvira (p. 200).    She reports her age as 50 and her birthplace as South Carolina while all children are reported as being born in Tennessee.  By 1860 Elizabeth is in Texas along with Ann, Calvin, Francis (assumed to be James F.) and Elvina (Young County, p. 398).  In 1870, C.L. (assumed to be Calvin) is listed as the head of household (Parker County, Texas, p. 366).  Living with him are Elizabeth, Ann, and Elvina.  The same four are listed in the 1880 census.  Elvina and Ann are identified as C. L's sisters, and Elizabeth is identified as his mother.  One additional fact of note is that the absent father's birthplace is identified as South Carolina.  That fact, if correct, suggests a tie between this group and Jesse of South Carolina as he is the only known adult Bandy in South Carolina in the late 1700s or early 1800s when C. L.'s father would have been born.    Dempsey and Elizabeth's children are assumed to include:

 

??        Elizabeth Bandy (August 21, 1821 -  August 27, 1877) who married William Calvin Faulkner (July 4, 1816 -  September 13, 1892) in Lincoln County, Tennessee on  September 17, 1842. They are listed in the 1850 Lincoln County census with Elizabeth’s assumed sister Ann Bandy living with them.

 

??        Sarah Bandy who married James Rutledge on  February 1, 1848 in Lincoln County. Other that the time and place of the marriage, there is no other evidence to support Sarah as a daughter of this marriage.

 

??        Caroline Bandy married John B. Kearby on January 16, 1850 in Clark County, Arkansas. Based on the name and the fact that Elizabeth was listed there in the census months later, Caroline is assumed to be Dempsey and Elizabeth’s daughter.

 

??        Calvin L. Bandy was listed as age 22 in the 1850 Clark County, Arkansas census.  He was listed as age 28 in the 1860 Young County, Texas census.  He probably is the C. L. Bandy who served in the 21^st Infantry, Company D and Infantry Griffin’s Battalion, Co. E. during the Civil War.[28] Calvin (listed as C. L.) was listed as age 42 in the 1870 Parker County, Texas census, and he was listed as age 52 in the 1880 Parker County, Texas census. Calvin B. Bandy, age 27, Violet  M. Bandy, age 21,  and Cornelia Bandy, 8 months, are listed in the 1850 Lincoln County, Tennessee census. C. B.. Bandy is listed in the 1860 Sacramento County, California census as age 39 and a Tennessee birthplace. He is listed with Violet Bandy, age 30, and a Tennessee birthplace, C. J. Bandy, a 10 year old female with a Tennessee birthplace,  C. F. Bandy, a four year old male with a California birthplace, and Laura Bandy a one year old female with a California birthplace.  John R. Bandy reports that Calvin B. Bandy married Violet Rucker. It is not clear, but it appears that there were two Calvins.  If  so, one moved to Arkansas before 1850 and on to Texas by 1860 and the other to Sacramento Valley in California in 1852.  C.F., listed in the 1860 Sacramento household, could be Cornelius Philander Bandy who married Hattie Castello in 1883 in San Francisco.

 

??        Reuben Rufus Bandy is not found in census records, but John R. Bandy reports  Reuben Rufus (from whom he is descended) and Reuben’s possible brothers Calvin, James, Jesse, and Cornelius.

 

??        Cornelius Bandy, who is reported by John R. Bandy,  is not found in census records, at least with that name.  But see the above discussion of Calvin.

 

??        Ann Bandy is listed in the 1850 Lincoln County, Tennessee census as age 28, and living with her assumed sister Elizabeth Faulkner. Ann is listed as age 36 in the 1860 Young County, Texas census, age 45 in the 1870 Parker County census, and  age 60 in the 1880 Parker County census. She is listed with a Tennessee birthplace, and as Calvin’s sister.

 

??        Jesse Bandy was listed as age 18 in the 1850 Clark County, Arkansas census.

 

??        Mary Bandy was listed as age 16 in the 1850 Clark County, Arkansas census.

 

??        James F. Bandy was listed as age 14 in the 1850 Clark County, Arkansas census.  Francis (assumed to be James F.) was listed as age 24 in the 1860 Young County, Texas census.

 

??        Elvira  Bandy was listed as age 12 in the 1850 Clark County census. She was listed as age 21 in the 1860 Young County census, and she was listed as age 25 in the 1870 Parker County census. She was listed as age 35 in the 1880 Parker County Texas census.

 

Dempsey’s 1830 listing suggested five daughters born by 1830.  Elizabeth’s 1840 census listing suggest that at least two more daughters were born in the 1840's.  The listing above includes one fewer daughter than is suggested by the census listings.  The number of sons matches census records.  Another possible son is John B. Bandy who married Elizabeth Adcock on August 15, 1848 in Lincoln County. Other than the time and place of this marriage, there is no other evidence, however, to support John as a son of this marriage.

 

·                     Another possible son of Jesse and Charity is Jesse Bandy (Jr.) (17-1636) (1801 - ? ) who married Artimissa Underwood in Roane County, Tennessee in 1822[29]  Artimissa's parents, John Underwood, Sr. and Jane Utley Underwood, were both born in Virginia around 1775.  They married in South Carolina in 1796.  The Underwoods had 12 children including John, Jr. (1800-1870), discussed below, and Artimissa  (1798-?).  Their six older children born before 1811 are all reported as being born in South Carolina and the six younger children born after 1811 are all reported as being born in Tennessee indicating that the Underwoods moved from South Carolina to Roane County, Tennessee around 1811.[30]   Roane is adjacent to Rhea County where Jesse and William lived.

 

What happened to Jesse (Jr.) is not clear.  In 1830, Jesse is listed in Roane County along with a wife in her 20's (probably Artimissa) and four children (two girls under 5, one boy under 5, and one boy between 5 and 10) (p. 33).   In 1840, a Jesse heads a household in Lincoln County (p. 48).  The ages of family members is generally consistent with this being the Jesse married to Artimissa.  The Lincoln County connection is consistent with the above discussion of Dempsey (17-1740) and George (17-1741), and could also mean that Jesse is the son of John, discussed below.  Jesse did not accompany either the Underwood or Bandy family in the move to Missouri. 

 

A 49 year old Jesse Bandy is listed in the 1850 census for Robertson County, Tennessee as married to a 37 year old Sarah (p. 45).  Is Sarah short for Artimissa?  If so, her age must be reported incorrectly as she would have only been 12 years old in 1822 when they supposedly married.  Sarah could be another woman as she reports her birthplace as Tennessee. Artimissa was supposedly born in South Carolina around 1798.  This Jesse reports his birthplace as North Carolina, the same place as his sister.  Living with Jesse and Sarah in 1850 is John Castcal.  My guess that this is John Casteel, a relative to the Casteels discussed below.  Vera Casteel reports that Jesse Bandy married Sarah Casteel in 1835 in Rhea County, Tennessee.

 

·                     Another possible son of Jesse is David Bandy (17-1744) who married Margaret Casteel on August  6, 1828 in Rhea County, Tennessee, the same year Nancy Bandy married Joseph Casteel.[31]  In the 1830 Rhea County census,  David is listed as being in his 30's,  with one male under age 5, and one between 5 and 10.  The only female is listed as being between 15 and 20 suggesting that Margaret was a young bride. On December 28, 1831, a warrant was issued for the arrest of David Bandy in Rhea County.  David owed Thomas McCallie $4.40. On December 29, 1831 the warrant was cancelled with a notation “paid in full.”[32] On May 7, 1832, David Bandy and assumed brother Dempsey inventoried the estate of David Casteel.[33]   David Casteel (1806 - 1832) was Margaret's brother.  David Bandy still lived in Rhea County in 1840.  In what appears to be a duplication, David is also listed in Polk County in 1840 (p. 22).  In the 1840 listings there are two males under age 5 (Edmond and an unidentified child?), two more males between 6 and 10 (Greenbury and John?), one between 10 and 15 (Jesse?), and one (David himself) in his 30's. The females include one under age 5  (Mary ?) and one in her 20's (Margaret).  The  Polk county listing indicates that the older female is between 15 and 20.  That is assumed to be an error. The last known reference to David is in February 1843 when the estate of John Cozby is identified as owing money to David.[34]

 

The 1850 Madison County, Missouri household of 20 year old Thomas and  40 year old Margrette Parker includes six Bandys along with 7 month old David J. Parker.  It is thought that David and Margaret Bandy moved to Arkansas in the 1840's, and  after David's death Margaret married Thomas Parker. They settled in Missouri.    In Thomas and Margaret's 1850 household are Jesse A. Bandy (age 21), John D. Bandy (age 17), Edmond H. Bandy (age 15), Mary E.  Bandy (age 10), Margaret A. Bandy (age 8), and Sarah E. Bandy (age 6 ) (p. 243).  Although Sarah's birthplace is listed as Arkansas, the five older children are listed as having been born in Tennessee. Margaret reports her birthplace as Kentucky.  On the same page of the census is Andrew Casteel (Margaret’s brother) and 10 other Casteels most of whom report Tennessee birthplaces.   Greenberry’s Confederate Veteran’s record lists  Margaret's father's name as Andrew Casteel.  That is judged to be an error. Margaret is the daughter of Joseph John Henry Samuel Casteel (1760's - December 10, 1840) and Elizabeth Ann McClellan (about 1779 - 1842).

 

In 1860, John D. (with 1 year old William J.), Mary E. (18-2969), and Edmond Bandy who lived with Sarah M. (who is assumed to be his wife rather than sister based on her different middle initial, Missouri birthplace, and age 19) remained in Madison County (pp. 605, 326, 330 respectively).  By 1870, Jesse A. Bandy with wife Elizabeth, J. B. (assumed to be John D.) and wife Mary,[35] and Mary W. (who could be Mary E.) are listed in Monterey County, California (pp. 605, 326, 330 respectively).  John and Mary's children all born in Missouri are William Jasper  (who was listed with John in 1860), Nancy Jane (born 1861), Elizabeth J. (1861) Sarah Evaline (also born 1861),  Mary Cornelia (1865), and John Anderson Bandy (1870).  Jesse A. and Elizabeth's children, all listed  as having been born in California, are John Henry (1863), Nancy Elizabeth  (1867), Clara Jane Bandy (1870).  In this census, Jesse A. lists his birthplace as Florida.  That does raise the possibility that this group is related to the Georgia Bandys as some members of that family spent time in Florida. He, however, lists his birthplace as Tennessee in the 1850 census.  The birthplaces and ages taken together suggest that the parents perhaps started out in either Tennessee or Florida in the 1820's, and that they where in Tennessee until around 1843.  They moved to Arkansas for short time in the 1840's, but moved on to Missouri where some members remained until the 1860's with other moving to California in the 1850's.  These facts are generally consistent with the parents being David and Margaret.

 

Greenbury Casteel Bandy (18-2964) (1831 - ? ) is listed in The Arkansas  Confederate  Veterans Census living in Howard County.[36]  The record indicates that Greenberry is the son of David Bandy, born  in North Carolina, and Margaret Casteel, daughter of Andrew Casteel of Farmington, Tennessee.  As noted above, she more likely is the daughter of Joseph John Henry Samuel Casteel and Elizabeth Ann McClellan. According to the record, Greenberry was born on August 8, 1832  near Nashville, Tennessee, and he married Ann Merrell (1840 - ? )of Shubuta, Mississippi.  Greenberry is identified as a minister. Green C. and Vicy A. Bandy are listed in the 1870 Clarke County, Mississippi census  (p. 710).  Green is listed as age 39 and a farmer. She is listed as age 30. In the 1870 census, Jesse lists his birthplace as Missouri.   Even though Greenbury was probably born in Tennessee, the reference to Missouri suggests that Greenbury is related to the  Missouri group discussed below.  Pickney Merrill and family are listed on the same page . Charles  Pickney Merrill (1816 - May 27, 1871) and  Mary Cooley are identified as Ann’s parents in an Internet file.

 

These facts and others presented below suggest that David and Margaret's children include:

Bandy (18-2966) is listed as age 21 in the 1850 Madison County, Missouri census with a Tennessee birthplace.  Although Jesse cannot be found in the census of 1860, he is listed in Monterey County, California in 1870.  Brother John and sister Mary are apparently also listed there.  Jesse is listed with assumed wife Elizabeth, age 36, born in Kentucky.   Elizabeth’s last name is believed to be Colyear. Jesse A. and Elizabeth's children, all listed as having been born in California are:

B. (assumed to be John D.) and  32 year old Mary Bandy are listed in Monterey County, California census.  John and Mary's children all listed with Missouri birthplaces in the 1870 census are:

(listed as age 19 and with a Missouri birthplace) are  in Madison County.  They cannot be found in later censuses.

 

??        Mary E. Bandy is listed in the 1850 Madison County, Missouri census as age 10 with a Tennessee birthplace.   Mary W., age 29,  (who could be Mary E.) is  listed in Monterey County, California in 1870 with a Tennessee birthplace.

 

??        Margaret A.  Bandy is listed in the 1850 Madison County, Missouri census as age 8 with a Tennessee birthplace. Margaret Bandy married John Turner on January 5, 1860 in Madison, Missouri.

 

??        Sarah E. Bandy is listed in the 1850 Madison County, Missouri census as age 6.  She is the only child listed with an Arkansas birthplace.  Sarah Bandy married William Linkhorn on April 5, 1860 in Madison County, Missouri. Sarah Manervy Bandy married A. Simmons on March 12, 1863 in Madison County, Missouri.

 

·                     Jesse and Charity’s likely daughters include Cynthia Bandy (February 27, 1806 - April 20, 1867) who married John Underwood, Jr., (June 25, 1800 - October 19, 1870) also in Roane County, on December 17, 1822.[37]  The Underwood family moved to Dade County, Missouri around 1847, the same time as William and Juditha and sons moved to adjacent Lawrence County.  It is noted that in the 1850 census, Cynthia Bandy Underwood reported her birthplace as North Carolina not South Carolina or Tennessee.  They had 16 children including a Charity Ann and a Jesse suggesting that Cynthia is their daughter.

 

??        John W. Underwood III (July 19, 1830 - December 13, 1892) married Mary Emaline O’Conner (about 1840 on April 15, 1858 in Cedar, Missouri and they had two children.

·                     A second possible daughter of Jesse and Charity is Nancy Jane Bandy (1808 - about January 16, 1898 who married Joseph Marion Casteel, Sr.  on July 15, 1828 in Rhea County,[38]  LDS CD-ROM lists Nancy Jane Bandy as being born in 1809 and as the daughter of Jesse.  The basis for that attribution is unknown.  It is noted, however, that their children include a Jesse Bandy Casteel and a Charity Ann Casteel who could have been named after Nancy Jane’s parents.  In the late 1840's, 18 families loaded their possession on a flat boat somewhere in southeastern Tennessee and floated down to the Mississippi River. They “came up” to Missouri where they settled. It is not known whether William Bandy and sons were in the same group. The two oldest Casteel sons fought for the Confederacy, and the seven youngest fought for the Union.  When she was about 90 years of age, the family was going west, and Nancy Jane said she would go as far as she could. She died in Kenton Oklahoma, in route. She and a cowboy were buried side by side at the base of Mesa Mountain. Joseph and Nancy Jane  had 16 children:[39]

 

??        John Henry Casteel (December 25, 1831 - between 1900 and 1904) was born in Rhea County, Tennessee and died in Alaska. He was ordered to leave home, and moved to Alaska where he discovered gold.  He never married.  He was engaged to be married when his wife to be died. He left his fortune to a couple who cared for him.  A similar story is reported below regarding his brother Richard.  It is not clear if either or both are true.

??        Richard P. Casteel (about 1849 - ? ) was born in Cedar County, Missouri. He went to Colorado when he was ordered to leave home by his father.  He discovered silver or lead and accumulated a sizable fortune which he left to a family who cared for him during his last illness. He apparently never married.

 

??        Tallitha Casteel (about 1850 - ? ) married Joseph Chittenwood about 1870. They moved to Idaho.

 

??        Elizabeth Victoria Casteel (about 1852 - ?) married John McVey. They moved west, and separated.

 

??        Jesse Bandy Casteel (about 1853  - ? ) was born in Camden County, Missouri. He died as a child.

 

·                     Another possible daughter is Charlotte Bandy who married Archibald Harris in Roane County, Tennessee on October 14, 1820.[40] Charlotte and Archibald cannot be found elsewhere.  Based primarily on the date of her marriage, Charlotte is thought to be the daughter of the older Jesse.  She seems to be too old to have been the daughter of William or others from the group.

 

·                     In the 1830 Rhea County Census, George Bandy (17-1741) is listed as being in his 40's living with 5 other males  (one each under 5, 5 to 10, 10 to 15, 15 to 20, and 20's) and 2 females (one between 10 and 15 and one in her 30's) (p. 372).  George is listed on the same page of the census as William suggesting they are neighbors.  No other references have been found to this George.   It seems fairly certain that would be other evidence of  household  this size.  It is noted, however, that Cela Bandy's 1840 Lincoln County census entry does very crudely match with George's 1830 entry.  She is listed with 4 males (one between the ages of 10 and 15 and 3 between 15 and 20) and  3 females (one each in her 20's, 30's, and 40's).  The differences could be reporting errors. The Lincoln County marriages presented above under the listing for Dempsey and Elizabeth could involve George and Cela's children. 

 

To date, no evidence has been uncovered suggesting what may have happened to George, his  wife, or the children in the 1830 household.  Further, the members of Jesse’s 1830 Rhea County household cannot be accounted for. It is possible that Cela was in Jesse’s household. Also, noted is that John Bandy listed in the 1820 Lincoln County, North Carolina census had a son whose age is consistent with George’s.  As there is no information what so ever regarding the identity of that son, it is possible that he is this George. Yet another possibility is the George listed in the 1830 Rhea County census is the same George listed in the 1830 Lincoln County, North Carolina census.  That is, he is the son of Pioneer George and grandson of Avy.  However, there is only a crude match with the North Carolina census listing. These is, however, too little information to reach any reliable conclusion.  Two possible sons are listed below.  The attribution to George should be judged speculative.

 

??        Jonathan Bandy (17-1640) (1811 - ? ) who married  Hethey Bolin (17-1641)(1812 - ? ) in 1831 in Rhea County.[41]     Jonathan was on the 1833 Rhea County tax list. The census of 1840 for Rhea County does not list Jonathan, but he does seem to be listed in adjacent Polk County (p. 22).  The listing is consistent with the 1850 census described below, and is on the same page as David Bandy discussed below. In the 1850 Rhea County census, Jonathan Bandy, age 39, is listed with Hester, age 38 (p. 310).  Jonathan listed his place of birth as North Carolina, and their five children are all listed as being born in Tennessee.  It is possible that this Jonathan and the Rhea County David Bandy are related to David Bandy of North Carolina who married Mourning.  However, that David appears to have a son Jonathan living in Cherokee County, North Carolina in 1850.   By 1860, Hester is listed without Jonathan and with two more children (Rhea County, Tennessee, p. 514).  Jonathan and Hethey’s children include:

 

???     Francis M. Bandy (18-2649) (1832 - ? ) is listed as age 18 in the 1850 census.  F. M. Bandy married Nancy J. Bean in Rhea County on February 8, 1855.  By 1860, Francis M. is separately listed with wife Nancy J. , age 26, and children (p. 517):

???     Elizabeth Bandy is listed as age 13 in the 1850 census.  She probably is the Elizabeth Bandy who married William S. Smith in Rhea County on February 14, 1856.

 

????   Mary C. Smith, born in March 1857 in Rhea County, married James G. Marriott on January 24, 1872.

 

???     John  P. Bandy is listed as age 10 in the 1850 census and as age 21 in 1860. The John W. Bandy who married Sarah Foar in Meigs County on June 29, 1865 is assumed to be the son of Ruben.

 

???     Sarah Jane Bandy is listed as age 8 in the 1850 census and age 18 in the 1860 census.

 

???     Martha E. Bandy  is listed as age 7 in the 1860 census.

 

???     James K. Bandy is listed as age 1 in the 1860 census.

 

??        Jesse Bandy (1814 - ? )  was listed with a Tennessee birthplace in the 1850 Pontotoc County, Mississippi census living with William and Martha Graham.. According to descendent Megan Zurawicz, this Jesse married Arthaleen Nix on April 7, 1850.  In the 1870 Lee County, Mississippi  census, Jesse A. Bandy, age 55, and Artheleen, age 39, are listed with 6 children (p. 491).  Mrs. Arthisa E. Bandy, age 46, is listed with 5 children in Lee County, in the 1880 census.  Listed with her is 9 year old Jesse.

 

???     John W. Bandy is listed as age 15 in the 1870 census.

 

???      Frank W. Bandy is listed as age 13 in the 1870 census.

 

???     Minatte H. Bandy (1857 - 1930)  is listed as age 11 in the 1870 census. According to Megan Zurawicz he married Jennie Self (1880 - 1958) about 1909. This may have been his second marriage. He died at Fort Cobb, Caddo County, Oklahoma.[42]   According to Megan, Minatte and Jennie’ chilldren include:
